IAC Questions

Ok just a couple questions, I've been having idle surge and rough idle problems. I read the checklist but I still dont understand a few things. If I replace my IAC do I have to restet my TPS and Idle or is that only if its lower than 600 rpm, and I heard that If you disconnect your mass air and the idle smooths out its definitely a bad IAC, is that right. Sorry if I'm being a moron but I'm really just learning to work on my own car so I'm not great at understanding mechanical terms.

Disconnecting the MAF has nothing to do with the IAC . It just shows that the MAF isn't doing its job properly.

The IAC isn't mechanically connected to the TPS. Changing the IAC does nothing to change the TPS setting. When you adjust the throttle stop screw under the throttle body, that changes the TPS reading. So any adjustment of the throttle stop screw requires a TPS check and possible adjustment.

Here's a book that will get you started with how the Ford electronic engine control or "computer" works.
