Ive just purchased my first mustang a 2002 GT which I am extremely excited about! I'm buying a catback borla stinger system and a K&N Typhoon Intake. My question is what is the next step people normally take on upgrading their car for best performance?

The other question I have is if I should be worried about hydrolocking on the CAI? If so are Short rams that much different on power loss?

Honestly save your money on the intake and just remove the air silencer and get a k&n drop in filter. Gears should be one of your first mods along with Full length subframe connectors.

+1 and if it's a manual transmission, an aftermarket shifter should be at the top of the list too.

+1 on the intake thing save your money and get gears, i bought a CAI for my 03 GT and afterwords wished i had used that money for something else, very little power gain with a CAI on our cars drop in K&N filters works just as well.... GET GEARS!!!!

Are you looking for pure power #s, ET, handling or just overall street car performance. Knowing your ultimate expectations for the car will help you decide your next mods and will make the process more efficient in achieving your goals.

Do you have emissions testing? If you do be careful with bolt on parts, most won't pass a visual exam. Gears are a great place to start.

I'd still do the intake, but I'd opt for a JLT. From there, my 2V recipe was:
Accufab plenum and Accufab 70mm throttle body (some folks dont care for these items and balk at the cost (which isnt too cheap, especially for Accufab - the best), but I had a solid gain at 3K RPMs plus. It was very noticable.
Catback / midpipe - My last catback was Borla Stinger. Together with an offroad X, it was loud, deep, aggressive and a bit different than most Mustangs you've heard.
Gears - 4.10s period. I had both 3.73s in one stang and 4.10s in the other...huge difference. Don't settle for 3.73s...you'll regret it. (I did)
With gears (and/or an offroad midpipe), you should get a tuner rather than waste money on a speedo corrector and/or MILs. Check what your local Mustang Tuner uses (Diablo, SCT, etc) and then buy the handheld from that company.
Full Length Subframe connectors. The unibody in these Stangs is awful. Tie it together with a set of Maximum Motorsports connectors.
Shifter - it helps, it feels good. Pro 5.0, Steeda Tri-Ax, MGW - any is better than stock.
Lower Control Arms - helps clean up the tracking of the rear end and plant power when you stand on it / launching. Pretty cheap and an easy DIY project.
Springs - lower that damn thing, it looks like a 4X4 with it's stock ride height. Consider shocks and struts at the same time while you're tearing into the suspension. Also add Caster/Camber plates (I'll recommend Maximum Motorsports again) to keep it all aligned.
Cobra Brake Conversion (Front) - this is a great mod, easy DIY and helps a lot. Cost is right on at about $360 thru Buy Ford Racing Parts!.

In the end, I added NOS Noszle kit for a 125 HP kick in the pants. If I was doing it over again, I would have gone with a supercharger...once you taste an extra 100HP at the wheels, you expect it, you want it, you need it all the time.

Have fun!
