I ordered a T-5z, the box says T-5 on the side, and there is a label on top of the transmission (stamped into the metal) that says Tremec. This sound right to yall?

Any one know of sure fire way to tell what it is?

Tag#1352-251-09335.

Tag pulls up as 93 or older T-5 WC, which I assume means World Class.

Relax! Good news: It is a T5-Z (the Z designation is from when the Mustang=Z in fordspeak). Tremec bought out Borg-Warner, so all newer T5 and T5-Z transmissions are also stamped with "Tremec". The -251 is for aftermarket with a 2.95 for 1st and 0.63 for 5th gear. It is rated at 330 ft-lbs and is the stoutest T5 available and comes with the Cobra pocket bearings and hardened alloy gears. Mine is surviving well and the gear ratios are great for the street behind my 3.40TL. :nice:

Here is a copy I found of good data and the tranny tags. The Z (M-7003-Z) was when the transmissions were made for the Cobra and are the -249 code. These are pretty rare (Cobras aren't often parted out). The -251 is identical, but is for the aftermarket and is still known as the z-spec like its twin -249. Make sense?

Cool, yea it makes sense.

Thats a good read actually, gave me what I was looking for, thanks.

I found a website yesterday where I could enter the tag number and decode it, but I was still curious why it said tremec on it. I thought Tremec bought Borg Warner in 1997, and this is a 1990 to 1993 trans.

But I`m happy, I wanted to make sure it was the "Z" I paid for mostly.

This is weird....

Shipping weight on the box says 92 lbs, T-5`s weigh like 70, and I know there aint 22 lbs of cardboard in this box....

That combined with the Tremec stamped into the transmision make me kinda wonder....

Anybody know where I can find pics of the front of the T-5 and the tremec so I can compare?

Does it have a wood frame inside the box? I shipped a T5 (one from a 1990 Mustang), the tranny weight was ~75-77lbs, but by the time I built a reinforced crate and added cushioning foam and a cardboard shell to it, shipping weight became 90lbs. The 92lbs isn't that far off if they added structural cardboard or fabbed a crate. Also consider a beefed up gear set and a steel front bearing retainer will add a bit of weight.

I wouldn`t have thought it, but maybe it could of.

My transmssion looks exactly like that one, so it must be T-5.

I was worried more then anything that if it was a tremec, that my install guy would have to raise my transmission tunnel to make it fit. I dont need any unexpected expenses on this one. I`m lucky the wife went for this at all.....

Oh by the way, that oil your showing in front of your T-5.....I dont think thats what your supposed to be running, supposed to use automatic transmission fluid in these is what I read....

Oh cool

Didn`t want to see you mess your transmision up using that stuff. I got the Amsoil too, Modern Driveline sent it with the kit. I`m waiting on the clutch and driveshaft then its off to the shop. I cant wait......this is gonna be fun.
