idle surges, gets choppy, then dies...HELP ME!!!

when i start my car the idle surges to between 1500 and 2000 for a couple of minutes then it levels out to a good idle, then it gets choppy and goes up and down and up and down until it goes so low it just shuts off. also the car won't fire up right away, i have to hit the gas sometimes. (the car sat for a little while)
Any ideaS??????

Dump the codes! if you pull the codes you'd save yourself a lot of headaches and chasing problems you may not even have.

on a side note, where has jrichker been? haven't seen anything from him in a long time!!! but yeah, usually, pull your codes and post them, and jrichker is a magical automated computer program that will find the answer to all your problems!

Sounds like IAC if the car has sat for a while. I know the ECU will make a car idle a little high during warm up but then should return to normal idle...
