Grady according to the article he grinded the entire crossbar off to run without the spacer. I think that's the only way to make them work is by removing most if not all the bar off.
I had to remove the whole bar and even grinding on the caliper itself a little. That alone was still rubbing inside the wheel so I bought a 7/32in spacer and it cleared fine AFTER.
