say you have a lump of money(not a whole lot but some) and want to put into a transmission. you start with a 65 289 w/ a C4 and want to go with something better like a Tremec 5spd or AOD...which one would you choose and why? what driveshaft mods would you need to do for the 5spd?

Depends on what you want to do with the car. What is your goal with it ? Cruiser ? Street/Track ?

right now shes a daily driver that i like to run hard. i plan on road courses, canyon runs and stuff like that, some drag, but not alot.

I would always choose a 5 spd. I feel like i have more control and more "one with the car" with a stick. But that is personal preference and has absolutely no facts to back it up or stats.

i feel the same way. i actually have an AOD, it just needs to be rebuilt. so by for the cheaper way to go is the AOD, but if im going to do all the work i rather spend the more money if i need to get what really is better. im figuring about 3k for a 5spd swap and like 1500 for the AOD. does that seem about right?

since you like to run hard, and play in the corners, sell the AOD and get a 5spd. depending on the level of mods you are planning, the "Z" series T5 would work nice on a mild 289(say up to around 350hp max). more than about 350hp you want a tremec 3550. if this were going to be a drag car, then i say build the AOD. automatics dont like the constant up and down shifting like that done on a road course, or running the twisty canyon roads, especially the AOD. you can do a 5spd swap for less than $3k though, depending on how much you pay for the 5spd to begin with.

how would you get away with doing it under 3K? most of the 5spds ive seen are starting at 1400 or so. then the clutch and all the converssion parts. do you normally need a longer or shorter driveshaft?

hydraulic or cable clutch?

I did my T-5 swap for less than a grand. I think I've mentioned that here before.

All eminently doable if you are willing to use good used parts.

Historic is smiling right about now.....

btw, just to keep my "azzhole" badge, the T-5 swap has been discussed a zillion times (including 2-3 times in the last 10 days) and lots of links/howtos were posted. Seek and ye shall find....

Don't go hydrolic unless you have to. Cable is IMO the best for a daily driver OR a race car. I'm using the modern drive line cable kit and cross member at the moment. The cross member worked GREAT but I'm not so sure about the cable kit. I had to modify the pedal bracket they sent me and I still can't seem to get the clutch adjustment perfect. Ron Morris sells a cable conversion kit and he just came out with a "better one". I havn't seen any info on his new one anywhere tho.

As for the drive shaft, when I swaped the C4 out of my 67 for a T5 I needed a new drive shaft because the way the stock one was made it wasn't worth modifying. I would recomend geting a brand new drive shaft made. Wenco built my aluminum drive shaft for under 200 bux including yoke and universal joints. Price on parts/materials has gone up so I'm sure milage may vary on that one.

My best advice on this one is that if you keep your eyes open and your are patient then you will find what you are looking for and you wont end up spending a ton of extra cash. Go slow and look for good deals on ebay or talk to people in your local Mustang club. You'd be suprised at how much stuff people have lying around they don't need or want. You can get stuff for really cheap, some times even for free.

Going the TKO route is fine if you don't mind cutting up your trans tunnel (beware, there are many here who believe no cutting is required, but seem to be more that believe it is necessary. Lastly, I decided to go hydraulic on the clutch after researching potential interferance problems with headers and power steering. Do your own research before putting down the cash. If you are like me, it's worht spending the extra couple hundred bucks to know everything fits and works properly and will not have to be redone a couple thousand miles down the road. Lastly, I decided to go hydraulic on the clutch after researching potential interferance problems with headers and power steering. Do your own research before putting down the cash. If you are like me, it's worht spending the extra couple hundred bucks to know everything fits and works properly and will not have to be redone a couple thousand miles down the road. whats a blocking plate?
i see places like mustangs plus has conversion kits. does this come with everything im going to need excluding bellhousing, tranny, shifter, clutch, flywheel?

The Corral classifieds is a good place for used stuff. Plenty of bellhousings there, flywheels, etc

You have two commodities here, money and time. You have to decide how much of one you are willing to trade for the other.

I got a used bellhousing off eBay for $40 and spent another $30 to have the machine shop glass bead it. Take a look at my pics and you will be hard pressed to tell it from new. The blocking plate fits between the rear of the engine block and the bellhousing (view the pics and you will see it). You can find them on eBay as well for a lot less money than new. I found mine at a local service garage and I offered him $20 and it was a done deal. You can go with the complete kits from places like Mustang's Plus or Modern Driveline, but I found that the kits may not have the right combo of parts that I was looking for. This is a judgement call. I have the parts list by vendor that I will post in another reply since it's complaining I have reached the character limit. Hope this helps.

buy a used trans and save a ton, my first used $350 trans from a junk yard lasted me about 6 years until i started getting more power from my engine
