I read an article before that cautioned the casual modder about upgrading brakes. It points out that our brake systems have a proportioning valve to apply the correct amount of pressure to the front vs. the rear brakes. This is a calculated proportion based on the front to rear weight distribution of the car, and the efficiency of the brakes. The proportioning valve ensures the fronts don't lock up before the rear, or vice versa. This results in the most efficient balanced braking, and the shortest stopping distances.
It continues by explaining that most casual brake upgrades are not what people think they are. When you upgrade the brakes, it takes less foot pedal pressure to lock up the front brakes or the rear brakes individually. Sounds great, right? Not quite. The front brakes approach lock up sooner than the rear ones since more braking pressure is sent to the front brakes. This has an effect of nose diving, which many people will interpret as "more efficient braking". In reality, the rear brakes are now less effective because there is too much brake pressure going to the front now. So instead of the four wheels doing their equal share in stopping the car, now the front two take more of the load and the rear two barely help.
The article summarizes that attention should be given to the proportioning valve when upgrading brakes. A brake upgrade should be done as a system, not just calipers or rotors at each wheel.
