does anyone know what i have to do to program a new PATS ignition key?
i only have 1 key at the moment.
it's for a 1996 GT

Go to the Ford dealer.

the 1996 is a PATS 1 system. This means you only need one key to reprogram it, the info is all in the owners manual if you have it.

it goes something like (this is from memory so it may be wrong):
insert working key
turn to run,
remove and within 15 seconds insert second key,
turn to run
security light should come on, or flash or something (cant quite rememer what)

thats it realy... but check the manual or do a google search for "programming a 1996 ford mustang pats key".. i think i found the info on several sites...

are you sure? for a 96?

i know you need 2 keys for a 98+ as thats when they switched to PATs 2, but the 96 and 97 were PATs 1.

here's what i found online for the 96 - early 98..

or Ford keys (1996 -early 1998 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

If you want to initiate a new master key....
1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.

2. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder OFF and then back to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.

3. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back ON (RUN) position. The dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.

4. After the security light stops flashing the third time, the new key has been programmed into the vehicles computer and will operate the car. It has replaced ALL the previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the vehicles computer.

If you want to add a key....
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.

3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).

4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.

5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.

then, for late 98 +

for Ford keys (Later 1998-newer Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

If you want to initiate a new master key....
1. This requires that the vehicle be connected to special dealer equipment. There are two ten minute delays involved while this device erases all existing key programming and sets up the vehicle computer to accept new key codes. Two new keys should be ready because the system requires a minimum of two keys in the program. After the first two keys are programmed, additional keys can be entered individually by following the instructions for adding duplicate keys (below).

If you want to add a key....
**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**

1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.

3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.

4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE second and turn back to OFF.

5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.

6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5

the same info is on several sites, I'll take a look in my owners manual too, just to check.

A 96 Mustang is PATS control type A and uses key type 1 or 23 (10 cut).

As far as I know you will need to have a Ford tech help you with this because I am pretty sure the Ignition Key Code Program can only be accessed by a Ford scan tool like a WDS or NGS. The tech will be able to pull up a PID named NUMKEYS. This will show how many keys have been pregrammed. The PATS type A will allow up to 16 keys to be stored. As long as you don't have 16 keys already stored, you can program the new key without erasing any key codes.

From my Motorcraft manual:

1.Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the RUN position using the new, unprogrammed ignition key.

2. Enter scan tool using the Ford Service Function (FSF) card and enter the appropriate instrument cluster. Follow Security Access to obtain security access.

3. From the scan tool menu Select: IGNITION KEY CODE PROGRAM.

4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect scan tool.

5. Attempt to start the engine with the new ignition key. The vehicle engine should start and run normally.

heres what my owners manual says:

Spare Key Programming Procedure

Two electronically coded keys were supplied with your vehicle, use one of these with the procedure below:

*Using a coded key that you can start your engine with, turn the ignition from the ON to the OFF possition

*Withn 15 seconds, insert a new key in to the ignition and turn it to N or Start. The vehicle does not need to be started.

If the key has been coded, the theft indicator will illuminate for two seconds. The key can then be used to start the vehicle.

Repeat until all chosen keys have been coded (max=16)

If key coding failed, the theft indicator will flash and the vehicle can not be started. One of 3 causes are possible:

*The new key was not inserted within 15 seconds or

*All 16 key codes have been stored or

*The key does not have an electronic code

The Ford dealer may is a little pricey. I used a private locksmith that could program PATS keys and it was much cheaper. Whatever the case, get a second key before you lose it or you will definitely be sorry.
