ignition problems! please help

got an 89 gt that i just bought and i have a problem. the fuel pump will not kick on unless you have the key in the start position. it will start for just a second when you have the clutch pushed in but as soon as you let off the key it loses fire and fuel. i know you should be able to hear the fuel pump when you have the key in the on position but thats not whats happening. please help

Have you ever replaced the ignition switch? Have you confirmed that it's completely functional?

no i haven't. thats what i was thinking but i just wanted to get an opinion before i started replacing parts.
