Hi,

I have a 332ci stroker with E303 cam, 11.25 JE pistons, Vic-Jr cylinder head and ready to run MSD distributor.
Anybody know what is the igntion advance ??

Thank you,

Reef

I'd say start at about 12 degree's initial, and then dial it in from there. Each motor is different. IS this the first start up? Or are you trying to dial it in now?

11.25 seems a lot for that cam.

Hi Thank you for your advice.
In fact, I'm going to replaced FORD distributor by MSD ready to run with iron gear.
Of course, I MUST to replace the iron one by steel one !

No, it is not the first start up. The engine has 5000 miles.

Thanks.

A vacuum gauge will also be a usefull tool to help dial in the motor.
The goal is to adjust the timing, and the carburtor, so that you get the best vacuum at idle.

if this is a fresh motor, i say go conservative for the break in period, something like 6-8 degrees initial, especially with your compression ratio. after you have some break in mileage on the motor, say about 500 miles, then you can start tuning the engine by adding some timing, add about two degrees at a time and check for detonation. if you have none on the grade of fuel you are running, then add a couple more degrees. i wouldnt go over 10-12 initial though, and i would limit the total timing to 36-38 degrees, and i would have the total timing in at around 3000-3300 rpm. this should keep you out of detonation depending on you grade of fuel.

Hi Reef,
How did you determine having 11.25 CR? Does that MSD have vac on it? How much mechanical built into the dizzy? What intake type? Any idea what the dynamic CR is?

Alright guys,

I'll do that between 10 and 12.
11.25:1 ? Because few years ago, I bought JE 11.25 adviced by the engine builder...

Intake is RPM Performer and VicJr from Edelbrock.

How I said, I must to replaced the iron by steel gear, do you know a link "how to ..."
I afraid to damage the distributor...

Thanks a lot !

Hey Reef,

Regarding changing the gear:
There is not much "how to.." in this. You need a pin punch suitable in size to drive the roll pin through the gear and shaft. You need to "firmly" support the gear and shaft at the same time, "whilst" driving the pin. A short handled dead blow hammer will suffice.
I will add, buying and installing pistons will not, in themselves, determine the CR of any given engine.
You need to know the.....
... "CC's of the head gasket at torque compression (the mfg, usually, provides this.
..."CCs" of combustion chamber with valves installed.
..."CCs" of the the valve reliefs or dish, or "pop-up" etc. (the piston mfg, can provide this number, however, I have found their CCs not correct, all the time).
..."plus" and or "minus" of the piston as it relates to the deck.
..."CCs" of the area around the circumference of the piston, that is located between the top ring and the deck at TDC.
...the bore and stroke.

The performer RPM is a very nice street-able intake. Those heads are nice, hopefully the valve train is up to the task, and your cam is up to the task of feeding them.

Have you ever gotten any compression numbers?

Good Luck!

Valve train

Hi PoppyMod,

You are too technical for me...
More details of my engine :
332ci
750cfm Holley
E303 cam (ex 290HR Magnum #31-452-8 from CompCams)
Hydraulic Roller Lifters (#851-16)
Magnum Pushrods 5/16" (#7631-16 ?)
Comp Cams Pro-Magnum Roller Rocker Arm
RPM performer manifold
VicJr head with 2.04 valve
MSD ready to run MSD distributor
MSD 6 AL
Valve train is Pro Magnum serie from CompCams.

I've Comp Cams double gear drive (#4120) timing chain, can I replaced the fuel Mallory 140GPH pump by the stock one ?
It's too noisy !!

Thanks for your advices !

OK Reef,
No problem with being too technical. So, retain that What it takes to determine "true" CR for the future.
So, to simplify, our engines are similar, I'm running 16 deg. initial advance for a total of 40 deg. (my dizzy has 24 deg. mechanical) 16+24 = 40 deg. I won't go into the dizzy vac, except to state, it can have an influence on your engine's response in the mid-range (cruise).
That 750 holly may be a little "big" for the street, especially if not jetted correctly. When I was running my Holly DP XE (dbl. pump, no choke horn), it was only 680! My AFR was low 13s from 2600 - 6100 RPMs. This is an indication of proper tuning.
So, getting back to your dizzy gear change. Did comp indicate, you needed a steel gear?
Hope this helps.

Probably around 34-36 degrees total advance will be what makes best power.

Initial is kinda dependant on lots of things, and it seems I'm always the one that runs more than most but you just have to experiment with it to see. Same with total timing, dyno or the drag strip is really the only way. You will not know by SOP feel from a couple degrees timing change what's best.

BTW are the pistons flat tops or do they have a dome to them?

I have a ready to run also. I had to have a friend of mine that had a press change it. If you send the dizzy to MSD they will change it for you. You can also trry some local autoparts (not autozone) that do some machine work.

palerider94,
Probably shipping or finding an American car parts store might be tough for him. Did you notice that he appears to be in France? He's giving a pretty good shot at communicating with us even though English seems to not be his first/main language. Reef, welcome to StangNet.

My experience has been that most of the car enthusiasts from around the world have way better Emglish skills than any German/French/Italian/ what ever skills I might have!

I guess, now, we're straying from the issue, but, it is true about the rest of the world and their learning English. We have Dutch friends and their command of spoken English is perfect. They are taught "proper English" as a second language and in their enthusiasm, thus, learned to spell and speak properly. A virtue, I'm sad to state, has been lost here in the states.

So what kind of fuel do they have in France?

Octane has an impact on the ignition curve.

Octane

Hi,

Thanks guys.

About octane, we have 98 and 95.
The first is more expansive than the second but of course better.

Regarding that, the adance is not the same ?
Or it's ok for 10° to 12° ??

Regards,

reef
