So my friend with an old mazda mx-6 turbo is swapping out his stock turbo for an aftermarket one. He's giving it away and I want to know if I can use it on my car. Of course I need fuel upgrades, tune, and plugs but is it a good turbo to use? It's an IHI RHB5. I hear these are used in the old t-birds and 2.3L stangs.

Find some specs on it with google, and ill tell you. Need at least the A/R on both the hot side and the compressor side. That should give enough info. But im going to go out on a limb and say that even 2 would be too small.

If the turbo is too small, your power will just flat die in the upper RPM, but you would have instant spool up and massive amounts of nearly instant torque.

I don't know what A/R means but people on the mazda forums are saying that it is .60/.63.

So do you think that top end performance will decrease even with 2 of them?

EDIT: I may just have to decline the offer. I'm finding that these turbos can barely handle 200whp.

I looked around and it looks like the compressor side is decent at somewhere around a .55 A/R. But the hot side is VERY small...like a .48 A/R and that absolutly kills topend power. Here is a pic of a modified one (there are a few differnt versions but I believe the hot sides are all the same...this one has a larger compressor side though) Look at how small the hotside is. PERSONALLY i wouldnt touch it...

My turbos have a .50 A/R comressor side....68 A/R exhaust side...and a 57 trim wheel on the compressor side. (Thus why its a 57MM) These turbos are actually good for somewhere a bit over 400RWHP each. I reccomend getting something atleast around that size....I got mine for $250 each on Ebay . Just hope you can fabricate lol.

EDIT: Oh yea and definatly go with a twin setup....with like my twin 57s, they will spool up faster than a single T-70 and have more power potental. Its a proven fact that you can put a single T-88 on one engine and put 2 T-76s on another of the same spec. Say the T-88 hits a full 15PSI @ 3500RPMs and has a peak power potental of 750RWHP.....then if you size the twin 76s correctly and run them, they will not only spool up a few hundered RPM faster but will have a higher peak power potental. Or you can size the t-76s to spool up at the same time the single 88 does, but they will absolutly blow it away interms of power potental.
I am NOT saying that the twins would make more RWHP over a single on a stock GT, but its like the difference between a 1.7L KB and a 2.2KB. You wont see much differnce at low/same boost on a stock motor, but when you want to go for it and crank up the power, then the difference will really show up. And all the while the boost will come on sooner, and your exhaust will actually sound good

You hit the nail right on the head.
That would be a excellent turbo to use on a street driven car.
That turbo is quite small I agree but, efficient for a daily driver
because it will spool very quick. You could use that turbo on your
car.It is complicated peicing together any turbo kit though without
the know-how of course.

Custom fabricating is a B1TCH. I put TTs on my old Mitsu 3kgt....and it was hard ass work. You'd be better off buying a SC that bolts straight on, or the TT kit from MPH. Unless you HAVE to time to do all that custom fabricating.

I would go with a small AND large turbo. One that spools hella fast for low end, one monster for the top end.

For now my goal is to have 370rwhp. Nothing too crazy, this car is a DD. This IHI turbo that I'm looking at is made for 4 cylinders (small) so it should spool hella quick. So I can use a huge turbo in conjuction with the IHI to compensate for the top end loss. Correct?

What type of turbo should I use as the second one? I'm thinking that the 57mm that hotmustang331 recommended should be good enough.

you guys are making this way too difficult. if you are fabbing this, you want to keep it simple. go with a nicely sized single and you will make great low end power as well as top end. this is the wrong forum to LEARN on. you really need to go over to turbomustangs.com and search. if you said you were going to use that turbo on your car you would be ridiculed

Well then, thanx for saving me from embarassment. I'll just pass up this offer.

seriously. everything you want to know is on that site already. there are not as many mod motor set ups, but that really shouldnt even matter. all you really need is a nice rotating assembly and some stout valve springs and a 2v can make mad power with a nice single.....upwards of 600 with fuel and tuning

Yea, they probably would be pefect for him IF he stays happy with his goal of 370RWHP...as those would probably get him there @ around 10PSI.
The thing would probably feel about like a kennebell though lol, and make peak power at around 4800RPM....but after that power would probably drop like a rock. I doubt he could even tell it was a turbo lol.
