Heres the new combo so far :

I ordered a 306 kit. and a TFS stage 1 cam. new lifters and rods so everything is new in motor. will get new timing chain kit thats adjustable also

Here are the details.

NEW 302/306 FORD KIT
NODULAR IRON CRANK, CNC PROFILED LIGHTWEIGHT FORGED I-BEAM RODS AND PROBE FORGED PISTONS!!
THIS 302/306 KIT FEATURES:

NEW HAWKS RACING 302 3.000"" STROKE NODULAR IRON CRANKSHAFT WITH STD/STD SB FORD JOURNAL SIZES
NEW 302 5.090" CNC PROFILED LIGHTWEIGHT FORGED I-BEAM RODS WITH APR WAVE-LOC BOLTS (PRESS-FIT)
NEW PROBE .030 FLAT TOP, PIN FIT PISTONS PISTON AND PINS (9.0CR/58cc)
NEW PREMIUM ROD AND MAIN BEARING SET STD
+.030 PREMIUM RING SET

I have Thumper Ported e7te heads with stock valve size and upgraded springs. I plan to go ahead and reuse these heads. I am building this for daily driver in my vert and ocassional track use. I went with forged so I can add a Nitrous kit for the track.
My currant motor is the thumper heads stock bottom end ...comp cams nx264hr cam 512 lift 212/218 @ .050 with 1.7 roller rockers its .544 lift. I have cobra intake and 65 mm TB 24# injs and pro m maf calib for 24#.

I plan to reuse all of these items above with one exception. I am using the TFS stage 1 cam advanced 2 degrees at thumpers suggestion.

"TFS 1 cam and install it at 105 ( 2* advanced), it will have more duration than the 264 cam ( 221-225 vs the 212-218 ) still has the 112 LSA for a good flat torque curve and setting the cam in at 105 will launch you off the stops!! The lift will be a little shorter 528-540 vs 544-544 and with the high velocity of the heads will scare you!! The idle will be more raspy yet still controllable and the power will amaze ya!! I always thought the cam you chose was a little small, but that is just me!! Torque is the intake center line on the cam... the TFS1 has a 107*, anywhere from 104-106 is good!! you could even advance it as much as 4* ( 103*) and still pull like hell thru the entire RPM range .5800-6K!! I have done a few AOD cars with less heads than you ( gasket matched and egr removed...by me of course) and they LOVED it, and the heavy vert will also!!"

Sounds like a good beefy bottom end, the block will give out before the rest of the internals. What kind of balancer are you going to use? On a new motor I would want a good SFI unit. What kind of shot do you plan to run?

Why bother with the rods and crank? If you are gonna spend the cash, stroke it. I don't understand. The stock bottom end will out live the block.

TFS stage 1 cam is a poor choice. Look at something like the comp 281hr or 280hr depending on intake choice. The f303 would also be a decent choice.

I got the whole kit for about 700.00 I dont want a stroker. I wanted strong stuff for a healty shot of nos i have my eye on a kit made especialy for the cobra intake that will go up to 300 shot

Hey 5.0Droptop,

That combo is just about identical that I had built. My engine builder recommened some pistons and rods etc, and I went with what he suggested. I trust him, he has been building engnie for about 30 years. He builds all of the race motors around here. 306, Thumper heads, TFS stage 1, 1.7's, 24#er's, 76mm maf, 70mm TB, Typhoon upper/lower (cleaned up a little), and the cam advanced 4 degrees. It should be going in the car around August. I replaced just about every piece of the engine that I could. I was going to stroke it, but decided not too at the last minute. What started out as a budget motor, quickly changed, but that's the way it goes. It is blower/turbo ready for sure.

I still have to paint the block and put all of the polished pieces on it, but here is where I am at so far.

Looks great! I am hoping it will be a performer on the street and some fun at track. I asked Thumper what cam and he said the tfs 1 advanced 2-4* I am excited!

There's nothing wrong with the TFS stage 1 cam. It's a nice lift and a good dual-pattern cam that has more lift on the exhaust side - the area it really needs to be on a 5.0.

Plain and simple I trust Thumper. If he says TFS 1 thats what I am gonna do. No need to make it an arguement.

I wouln't get the TFS Stage I, I could be wrong but I know someone with that cam on 1.7's with a similar combo as mine but he has AFR 165's and I have Thumpers, he has shorties and I have longtubes. I have the B cam on 1.7's and my drivability is better, and my powercurve is more stable. We did a highway run and it was side by side, I thought with AFR's he would shurly pull on me top end.

Maybe the TFS 1 is not good for the afr heads? I talked to Thumper about the E cam because i was considering it myself.
