So, I retired from the military 1 Jun. Ive been taking things easy and relaxing for a few months. I did some consulting work and earned a little scratch to pad the bank account for a rainy day. Our house was rented for 5 years and was in pretty crappy condition when we evicted the renters. So Ive been doing some maintenence and remodleing, working on the landscaping, just catching things up. The misses works a pretty decent job. Moneywise we have been doing pretty good, we have all we need, but we did cut back on the spending since I left the military.

Tomorrow morning I go for my final orientation and physical to start my new job. It pays alot less than what Im accustomed to earning, but its 5 days a week, no weekends, no holidays, and I dont get transfered every 2-3-4 years.

As soon as I get the green light that Im employeed, Im buying my GT bumpers and dual exhaust.

After those mods it will be CAI and tuner, or nothing until a procharger. Ive just got to decide if I want to invest that much.

In my family we tend to keep Mustangs for a long time. My folks had thier 67 for over 25 years, my brother has had a 68 for over 20 years, I had a 88GT for 11 years.

Im feeling wood.

I thought I was going to hold out for a S/C... but was pretty much choking on the cost... Then these guys in here started talking about how inexpensive the Zex nitrous system was....hmmmmm.... what the heck... so I bought the kit... was very nervous about giving my little car the juice.... then I tried it out! WOW! I'm now hooked! The nice thing is I need absolute no boost driving around town here... If I had the extra power all the time like with a S/C or Turbo.... well, I'll probably loose my license!!! As tempting as it is, I avoid using the N20 on the street... I save it for the track! So it keeps me in check! LOL!

Do you think that our engines could handle a supercharger or turbo for any length of time without internal work?

"OK, speaking of power adders, heres where we get unhappy with the heads—they are very thin walled aluminum construction, and they have the “Swiss Cheese” deck like the 94-95 3.8 heads that were so prone to blowing head gaskets. Each cylinder is surrounded by 4 head bolt holes and 8, yes 8, large coolant holes! That’s 12 holes! The cylinder deck integrity is very important to preventing blown head gaskets, and the deck integrity has been compromised on the 4.0 SOHC engine because of all the giant coolant ports that Ford put into the head deck. We already know of blown head gaskets and cracked pistons on supercharged 4.0 SOHC’s at only 8 psi." This is from a PDF on our 4.0 SOHC that was linked by JENNS05STANG in another post. The site linked to sells (shocker) headers, valves, etc., but that does not necessarily mean that they are lying about this. However, I do not have the necessary expertise to evaluate this statement. Help? I was thinking about going turbo or SC in a few years (when it is paid off) and hoped I would not have to spend even more money getting my engine ready. Any thoughts?

Understood. However, I was just wondering if it would be worth it to reinforce the internals. I wasn't sure if the authors of the review were looking to sell headers, valves, and cams, or if they had a point about an inherent weakness in the 4.0L. I guess we will have to wait and see... Personally, I would rather NOT explode anthing just yet!!! But that procharger kit DOES look nice...

The one for-sure 1st thing that you'll have to do if you add boost is to up-grade the Head Gaskets (the stock ones are pretty flimsy I'm told) :fuss:

Otherwise, like he said - I'd just run it until something broke and THEN do the internal upgrades ...

The thing is there is a lot of 4.0 rangers and explorers run S/C units.. I showed that article to some on trust... his take was that a lot of the article was based on "old school" thinking and that a lot of things have changed... get with the times... LOL

I know Explorer Express is coming out with a Eaton unit... now that will be nice... 70% of boost at 1800RPM!!! WOOHOO!!! LOL!
