If you can see gears then I'd be suprised if there's any fluid left in the box to leak. Have you lost some kind of inspection plate? Where can you see the gears? I wouldn't recommend driving your car till you get his sorted out.

YOU CAN SEE THE GEARS?? Dear god your tranny is in bad shape. No wonder it leaks transmission fluid all over the place.

obviously it doesnt hold fluid, and that from those angles it looks like the tranny came completely loose from the engine. I could be completely wrong but thats what it looks like to me. Does it rattle around, and will the car even drive?

...thats really weird. DOes it look like the tranny has slipped away or does it look like just a spacer, gasket, or plate is missing from it? cuz to me for some reason it looks like the tranny has slipped away. Either way I definately wouldnt drive it until you get that fixed and get some new transmission fluid back in it.

It just looks to me like the inspection cover and bolts are gone. Its also hard to tell which oil is coming from what under there.

Stop! Man o Man.....

It's just missing the inspection cover. Many cars are missing the inspection cover. It's no big deal, you can drive it that way. That is your flywheel, not a gear in the tranny. If the tranny were seperating form the ingine, you would know it by now.

Bring it to a shop and have them check for leaks. They will probably need to get the thing good and clean and start from there.

lol. I think everyone was about to have a seizure there for a minute. Like Max said, it's just the inspection cover. Would probably be a good idea to get one though. I imagine all of the dust and such getting up in there will eventually take it's toll.

I did the same panic thing when I found out my cover was missing. Dad explained what it was, I've gone ten years as a daily driver without it and never had a problem. I actually had completely forgoten about it until now.

As for the leak or "red stuff", I would say check the transmission dip stick "O" ring. That's where my leak was........

How long has it been leaking? It may just be "that time of the month".

So long as you don't keep adding fluid, it will eventually quit leaking.

Check the two tranny lines for leaks, the dipstick o-ring, and most of all the tranny pan. People always overtighten the pan and bend it so it doesn't want to seal anymore. Another very likely possibility is a leaking power steering line; that stuff will blow everywhere when you are driving down the road making it hard to track down. Wipe a rag over the hoses and bend them back and forth; I bet you'll find they are cracked and need to be replaced.
Don't worry about the inspection cover and that is called flexplate on an automatic transmission.
