i'm losing oil

my check oil light came on today. i was 2 1/2 quarts low.

now that there is oil in it, there is a big cloud of smoke at startup. more white than blue, but it must be oil because it smells like oil and i'm not losing coolant. then i don't see smoke or smell oil in the exhaust until the next time i start it up.

what might it be?

if i blew up my engine, i'll be extremely bummed. the car is going to the mechanic on monday. i was going to have him put in the coil-overs, but i have a new task for him now.

Ummm isnt that sometimes a symptom of valve seals or somthing when it puffs a big cloud at start up?


Could it be blowby or anything from the boost? This wasnt a problem before was it?

prolly valve seals thats the only thing that really settles when you shut your car off

Just double check everything. When i put my holley intake on, i forgot to put the plate under the PCV so it was sucking up oil. Then on starts it would puff a ton of smoke but after that, it wouldnt really do it. Maybe it wasnt enough oil to cause visual smoke until it settled when the car was off?

sounds the same as what i'm seeing. i hope that's all it is.

no it wasn't a problem before the blower


so the theory is that i'm sucking oil from the pvc up into the intake, it is settling when the car sits, then burning when i start? i hope that is what it is because i can live with that.

Chris, I think the guys above are steering you in the right direction. How long have you been driving the car since you put the blower on?

about a week. i'm sure it is generating an awful lot of suction.

there does seem to be alot of oil in the pcv vacuum tube. i'll check it at lunch today and post back.

I'm saying either the pcv plate isn't on or you've got KB problems just like JR had. Good thing you've already chimed in JR.

the pcv valve fits into a plastic piece. that piece plugs into the hole in the lower. at the bottom of the hole in the lower, there is what looks like a metal filter or screen. the plastic piece holds the filter down.

is that the "plate" you are referring to? if so, it is in there, i checked at lunch.

when i took it out, the tube the pcv valve was attached to was lined with oil.

i redid the hoses to vent the pcv to the atmosphere for now to see if that keeps the big puff of smoke from happening at startup.

i thought JR's problem was that the blower was leaking oil ...

Nah, on my holley systemax II, on the bottom of the lower was a metal plate that got screwed into the bottom of the lower to baffle away the oil and to let the gases get up and through. Without that plate there oil will just be coming straight through up through that metal filter you are talking about, through the pcv and into the motor.

Im not sure if you bought your intake new or if it came on it. This plate came pre-installed on my TFS-R intake, unlike the holley.

Other than the big puff of smoke, that sounds like my problem. It wasnt sucking oil out of mine though, it was an overpressure in the Crank case pushing the oil out, if i pull the pcv, or the tube off the valve covers, or the dipstick, i would get air and some smoke coming out of all of them, we did a leak down and i have WAY to much leakdown(15-17%) for a blown motor.

If you can, try to take out your pcv and then remove the metal screen. If you see your lifter valley through there, then you don't have your splash plate on and thats your problem. If you pull out the metal screen and see a plate blocking your view from seeing the lifter valley, then its there.

I almost forgot to put that plate on my Holley. That would have sucked ass. Make sure that baffle is there or you'll have a mess on your hands.

maybe mine is overpressure too?

with the tube vented to the engine compartment, i have a little smoke coming out of my pcv at idle. i also have a little coming out of the valve cover vent near the #1 piston.

i don't remember if there was a plate on it when i put it in or not. i bought it used.

i didn't pull the dipstick. i'll try that tomorrow

Yeah the problem I was having was the oil from the blower was disappearing. On start up I had black oil condensation splattering out of my pipes on start up. When under boost the oil would leave a spray on my back bumper. I determined that the blower was causing all of these problems b/c my motor yet beaten was still strong. I took off the KB and it stopped.

If you can, try to take out your pcv and then remove the metal screen. If you see your lifter valley through there, then you don't have your splash plate on and thats your problem. If you pull out the metal screen and see a plate blocking your view from seeing the lifter valley, then its there.

i guess i could try a smaller vacuum inlet to decrease the suction ...
