Well I pretty much finished putting the new intake on....
I go to start the car, and it revs to like 2k and dies.
Start it again..same thing.

It starts then makes a bad sound and dies...
I figure the timing is off, I got it running for a couple seconds and it runs SMOOTH when it runs...thats the thing.
I was playing with it but still no luck..I cant get it running for more than 5 seconds.
That and there has to be horrible vacuum leaks everywhere....it revs to 2k.

As for putting the coolant back in...I just fill the radiator overflow?
It'll flow through everywhere?

I feel like I'm in such a hole....

Does anyone have any detailed pictures of around the TB...EGR...vacuum lines...
I think I got some wrong.

I'm guessing this is your first intake rodeo go around

If so, did you go over all the lower bolts enough times to obtain
even tightness

It can take 4 to 6 times until they ALL will keep an even tightness

If you did not do this ... your lower is gonna leak air and fluids

Just a guess on my part my friend

Almost forgot ... after a couple of heat cycles ... you will find a few that
will be too loose ... sooooooo ... you'll need to run em one last time

Definately has to be a huge vacuum leak, are all the plugs/fittings in the intake? - what intake did you go with?

Grady- your probably right...but I SOOO do not want to do that again...

With this guy:



I ran him to another port on the intake..I think it was long enough to go to the front.
Where exactly is that coming off of?

Got it started...
There was a couple vacuum lines not plugged...
But its running kind of crappy...maybe on 7 or definitely a bad miss...
Hope its not an injector or something
But...the upper radiator hose is not doing anything...not filling at all.
I just want to make sure the engine is getting cooled...I put the t-stat in spring towards the engine.
After a couple minutes of ideling, coolant was leaking out of the overflow.

You want to make sure the car is cool. Take the radiator cap off, fill the radiator, then turn the car on. As the block fills and the thermostat opens it will keep pulling water. You have to let it run with the cap off up to operating temps. Then once you have the radiator full where it would over flow if you put anymore...put a little in the overflow tank and then cap off the radiator. This is how I always do it. At an idle you really have to let it run for a while before the system gets full all of the way. Hope this helps.

i had my lower intake manifold gaskets slip down once while i was installing my intake. it would idle at about 2k and i couldent figure it out till i pulled the lower

Ill bet you that thats your problem!

If its not, ill give you a cookie

You guys are really scaring me.....the lower gaskets.
I torqued them once by hand, and the second time in sequence with loctite to 26lbs with a torque wrench.
I did get it running to the point of idleing at the right spot just very roughtly....like its missing.
I'll run a cylinder balance test and see whats up, but I'm actually posting this from work right now...but you know how it works the only thing im thinking at work is my car haha.

heck, at least you didn't drop a bolt down into a runner, like i did! you'll get it worked out, learn alot, and be able to do the next one in an hour.

Guys...i should have never tried to tackle this job for the first tiem myself.

The two bolts on the upper under the plaque weren't completely threading in, so I yanked the upper off and tried to thread them in by hand.
The one was stripped towards the top but I could get a bolt threaded if I applied a lot of pressure....
I broke a bolt off in the lower...and i dont know what to do.
I've never drilled a bolt out...or helicoiled...

Anyone live near philadelphia and want to make some cash and work on a stang?
Seriously...lol

Yeah, its just so much.
I've been spending this time cleaning the garage and just over-looking things...found my throttle return spring (I thought I needed a new one)
Earlier I was getting a little crazy...every day the past 3 days I've been getting up to work on the stang...I'm sure all of you guys are used to it but its been killer along with work.

Anywho, I don't want to sound too optimistic but I think that I had a vacuum leak between the upper and lower from this bolt hardly being threaded in, and besides that it'll probably be just a few small things.
While the upper is off, I checked all the bolts in the lower and they are all very snug in there, around 26 ft lbs.

Keep the faith here brother

We all had to do our first intake swap out

I've never felt the lower needs that amount of torque
as
some of the bolts
pass through water jackets
which makes them brittle and the like

I've snapped of one or two bolts in the past myself
and
seen countless others do the same when using that much torque

I don't even use a torque wrench on the lower

I just snug them down with a 3/8 ratchet by hand

Again ... you gotta run them several times and once more after a
couple of heat cycles.

The important thing here is even tightness .......
as opposed to ... a whole lot of tightness

If you feel you don't have the feel for the amount
of tightness with just the ratchet ... I'd drop the torque back to
around 18 to 20lbs.

I just can't stress how much the tightness of the bolts will change
due to the following:
the long length of the lower causing uneven clamping force
the gaskets being compressed
and a couple of heat cycles

anyway ... you see what I trying to show here by now

btw ... as for the loctite ... I usually use anti-seize for that application with
the steel bolts and Aluminum dissimilar metals ... however ... even if you
are using iron heads ... IMHO ... this application does not warrant using
the thread locker liquid.

About that broken bolt ... You usually can get it out with an easy-out
But
Since there is loctite involved ......

If you have no success getting the bolt out
and
Before you do damage to your intake

Its gonna be a lot more work ... I know ...BUT ..............

If you take off the lower ... depending upon where the bolt snapped ...
You may find more bolt to grab with some vice grips or a similar method.

One last tip for you Joe

You can keep the gaskets in place during installation by using 2 to 4 pieces
of all thread or long bolts with the head cut off. Just thread them in one
or two rounds by hand toward the corners and the intake will slide down
over them nice and straight without hosing up the gaskets.

Hang in there Joe ... You'll be fine and so will be the Stang
