alright well i was gonna rebuild my transmission until i took it apart and found out i need all of the 3 shafts from being damaged to a previous owner who never fixed the trans leak. Does anyone know a place where i can find the cheapest price on a rebuilt transmission? or does anyone have one? I'm mainly looking just for a t-5 that shifts good and no grinding or anything. I live in the detroit area. any other help is appreciated. thanks also sorry if this should be in talk.

just get a 4-banger and change the pilot bearing.when i first got my car it had a 4-banger tranny but not the proper pilot bearing.i ran it for almost 2 years and bought a t-5z.i hate the high geared t-5z.i wish i had just changed the pilot bearing.besides you can get a 4-banger model next to nothing.despite what people say they can last just as long as a regular t-5.

I think the 4 cylinder had a different input shaft too.

I have own a transmission shop in Florida. I have a rebuilt T-5 sitting in my shop if you want it, I am looking for $500 + shipping for it. Ya, the input shaft is different but you can get a 5.0 clutch w/ the proper amount of teeth. This one is from a 4 cyl as well.

There is absolutely no internal difference between a T-5 out of a 4cyl and a v8, the only difference is the input shaft has less splines on it, and as long as you specify the number of splines, any parts store can get a 5.0 clutch to match it. Trust me we have swapped numerous T-5's out of 4 cyls into V8's at my shop!

It is a common misconception that the 4cyl and V8 T-5 tranny have some sort of internal difference. If this were true than ford would never have been able to put out as many as they have and they would have been outrageously expensive.

The only difference in the V8 and 4Cyl drivetrain w/ the exception of the motor is the rearend!

*Edit*: Well, time to admit my mistake...I just talked to my mechanic in the shop and he said there is a gearing difference, but he said they are interchangeable. Damn, I hate admitting when I am wrong. My old mechanic said there is no difference at all and my new one is the best with standards so I tend to believe him.

Yup there is gearing differences. A 4 banger T5 will make a 5.0 a bit quicker. But dont power shift it.

www.bieberfever.com will give you a core charge on a used T5. Also check out Astro.

Gearing is different. The gear alloys are the same but the mechanical advantage of the gearing lowers the torque rating to 240 ft-lbs.

Also, not all 4-banger T-5's are World Class. Depending on the year it may be a Standard T-5. In that case there are a lot more differences. The synchros are a softer brass and not the 3-peice design like the WC tranny. Also, bearings are a different design as the standard T-5 uses gear oil while the WC uses ATF.

With 5.0 T-5s being as weak as they are, the 4-banger T-5 should be considered a band-aid at the best. SOmes guys make them work for a decent amount of time but it only takes one good romp to snap the now weaker rated input shaft (again, gearing lowers the torque rating to 240 ft-lbs)

Personally, i would spend my time and money looking for a 90-93 5.0 T-5 that has a rating of 300 ft-lbs from the factory. A little bit stronger but you can still blow it up.

The T-5 is weak, but it's cheap as hell to rebuild.

This is a very good table for deciding which vehicles you want to look for a trans from. Click Here.

Notice that they make no reference to input shaft splines. I have not heard this being different. Maybe the above comments were in regards to the outputs? a friend of mine ran a 4cyl trans for about a year in a 306 w/ hci, and had no issues. I actually disassembled the trans for a class project and found it to be in excellent shape. The gearing advantage is nice.

The non-wc T5 transmissions do not use gear oil. The owners manuals for 1983 and 1984 Mustangs call out for DEXRON II ATF (I know, I am holding them).

Also, here is a quote from Ford Racing's 5.0 book on the 4 cylinder T5:

"Attempts should not be made to use them behind a Mustang V8 engine. T5s used in 2.3-liter Mustangs have a longer input shaft (7.41 inches, compared to the V-8s' 7.18 inches), with a smaller-diameter pilot snout (.590 inches, compared to the V-8s' .668 inches)."

If you didn't go with that one ..... you can try Phoenix Hard Parts. I got my ramanufactured 94-95 T-5 for $695 from them ....

Are those seriously the only reasons listed for not using the 4cyl T5?

Pilot Bearing is an easy swap.
.230" can be cleaned up pretty quick with an angle grinder. However, I think most people don't have issues with the length.

I have a t-5 tranny for sale. It's in a 2.3 LX, but it should fit your car. Let me know.

whats this about input spline difference?they use the same spline clutch disc.you just use a 5.0 clutch setup.also the minimal length difference doesn't matter.i ran one for almost 2 years before i switched to a t-5z.i actually liked the 4 banger model better.

There you go, that is your best bet. They are an awesome company and have pretty good deals. That is where I bought mine when I blew mine out.
