Inexpensive cold air package.

For those interested and those with Shelby hoods here in an inexpensive way to get some "cold" air.

It is aluminum and is made from a discarded road sign. It is going to take labor (use yours as your time is cheap) to make. If anyone is interested I will get the measurements. The top "seal" is nothing more than a "sweep" used on the bottom of an exterior house door. It is the only thing I actually bought so you can say this thing cost me $1.97.

Oh, an air pan. It's not quite as cheap, but takes less time on fabbing it up. For drag cars we just run a flat plate that sits at the horn and the space is taken up with foam. I guess it could be cheap if you used old couch cushions. I don't think the foam is flame retardent, you can get it at a place that sells foam and it comes in different densities and you glue it on with some 3m Super 77 spray adhesive.

One of my buddies used to make the panel that covers the hole to your trunk when you remove you're rear seat out of "discarded" dumpster lids. You know the old aluminum ones with the "x" broke in the middle? That was in the late 70's/ early 80's.
 
Me too. I was given this sign by my boss when I worked at Hertz Rent-A-Car. It was not stolen. Mine is a little bigger for the hood we use.

It's one of 'em, with my wife doing the honors through turn 5 at Laguna. I like your car too and your old school approach to going fast. Your cold air idea is a good one. You can't help it if the sign jumps in on it's own. I call it recycling. Nice work.

We made two trips to LA from our house with this car, 8hrs each way. Once without the fresh air and once with it. The fresh air made the car run cooler and get better MPG. I noticed no gain in power on the track. On the track our hood would push a lot of air in the engine compartment anyway and we run a flow through K&N top so it may not do much, but it looks cool.

The wife can outdrive a few of the guys, her best lap that weekend was a 2:15. Not bad for a girl in a 3400lb car.

Hmmm, I have been contemplating opening up my hood under the scoop for some time, but I was going to keep the large stock aircleaner base for the bottom part, and put a much smaller cover on it that was only the size of the filter, leaving an open diamter all the way around. Then I was just going to add sometype of weatherstripping around the outside edge to seal it to the hood when closed. Wouldn't that provide pretty much the same thing?

Pakrat, one of the challenges you will have will be getting a standard type cleaner to "seal" to the front of the scoop opening. It is pretty forward of the carb and standard air cleaner area.

Mmmm, good point, I hadn't really looked to close to see how it lines up yet. Are you reffering specifically to the way the 65' lines up with the shelby scoop, or just in general? I figured when all was said and done that it would be simillar to the 68' 428 Cobra jet setup since my particular 69' scoop is closer to that design than any shelby one. Also, the area of hood to be cut out from underneath would be the area already marked for the optional shaker hood scoop which I just assumed to line up pretty well over the carb area.
