Info needed on tapping oil pan...

Alrighty, turbos should be mounted today...so we will need to be working on tapping the oil pan very soon. I want to know how most tap the pan, and what size everyone else is using (as in if there is a kit for this).
The turbo drain back hole is HUGE...I just freegin bought some insane 3/4 inch hose (250PSI, high heat...almost $11 per foot ), and 2 3/4 inch steel nipples...and thats barely big enough. Right now we plan on drilling a 3/4 inch hole and welding the nipple into the oil pan via the mig welder.

Anyone see any problems with doing this? (yes the oil will be changed and we are going to hold a magnet next to the holes as we are drilling it) . Yes I said holeS...we are going to do 2 for safetly reasons should one somehow rolleyes: ) clog up lol, and to keep each turbo completely independent.

well when i install vortech S/C's i first scrape off the paint from the front of the pan, then i use a center punch and hit it hard enough to make a hole then i use a bigger punch and move it aorund expanding the hole, but for a
3/4" hole i think that drilling is your best bet.

If you coat the drill bit in vaseline it will keep most of the metal shards from getting into the oil. The vaseline won't hurt the engine if a little gets in the oil and will hopefully hold and chunks of metal to the bottom of the pan,again if some comes loose.

Thanks guys...I thought that you ususally used a punch lol. But yea 3/4 will definatly need to be drilled.

Thanks for the vaseline tip...definatly another option .

what baotu a 3/4" hole saw? that way the majority of the metal wont be drilled - just the center hole (MAYBE 1/4") and the ring outside of it. that shodul cutdown on teh amoutn of shaving taht you will get.

Several months ago, I saw advertised in one of the Mustang Mags new products section, some kind of threaded insert designed for just such an application. They claimed you didn't have to punch / drill a hole in the pan. I remember thinking to my self . . . "self, how the heck is that possible?" Might do a little research on the web and see what you find . . . a 3/4" hole saw is going to cut a nasty hole and leave lots of metal behind to clean up - sure hate to miss something and have it wind up in your turbo . . . bad.

Yea, thanks for the info ...im still not 100% sure what we will do . Yea thats the last thing I want...metal shavings in the turbos . lol
Ill be updating my thread soon BTW...probably next week.

Don't you have to change K-members anyway? If so I'd just remove the whole pan and do it while it's off. I can't remember what kit you're using.. I was thinking it was the HP kit.
