Info on swapping a compete 98' explorer engine!

Can it be done? I guess its the same basic thing. Will it give me the same amount of power as if i put the p heads on my engine, etc. A local junk yard will not part the heads, but they sell completete engines. They have one with low miles for 800. Will it drop right in, as far as mounts, oil pan, emmissions,pullys etc? I could always swap stuff from mine. I know i will have to get some 94-95 p headers, that is fine. Im just wanting to get an idea on if this is possible, and worth it b4 i call the JY and tell em to hold it.

At the longblock level they're compatible. Accessory brackets are different, ignition is different, induction is different (but fixable). Not sure if the oil pan for the Explorer motor will fit in a Mustang, might have to swap yours.

i would just say f it and buy the motor then swap everything off of it u want i.e. heads and intakes. its well worth the 800. just look at the price of the heads alone (about a grand)

P's for $1,000, tell me where you shop and I'll avoid it like the plague.

I think you should just be able to pull the timing chain cover and pan and plug in a distributor. That should do it besides electronics. I would be very tempted to put in a new cam and a better timing chain while everything is out in the open.

you can get the heads that are on that motor for 3-400, 1k is entirely to much for a set of gt40/gt40p irons

yeah, true; is there any way to make sure that is has the gt-40 p's? is it marked anywhere? also, what cam is best, and where can i get headers? thanks!

I think like Hairycanary touched on about ignition, it has a different firing order than the GT's. If Im not mistaken, in order to change that, you would have to change the cam. Although, you could run the Explorer firing order. I am also about 90% sure the oil pan is completely different. Ours has two sumps to make room for the K-member.

buy the engine, and sell the parts you don't need to the explorer crowd. there are lots of people into that s.u.v.

that's what i did. bought a 6k mile explorer engine from a salvage yard, complete throttle body to pan for $800. then, i sold the intake, throttle body, coil packs, wiring harness, oil pan, accessory brackets, valve covers, injectors and flywheel, and i actually MADE money.

What kind of junkyard sells an engine without heads? What a bunch of crap! That is unheard of. Most junkyards wont sell the accessories (power steering, alternator, smog, etc) already bolted on an engine in a sell. This crap with the heads is a joke.
