Installation question with Griffin Radiator using stock fan and shroud

So my electric fan still isn't here, but I want to drive the car... If you have the Griffin, you know there is no lip on the radiator to drill a hole in to put the bolts through for the stock fan shroud. Anyone ever mounted the stock fan shroud with these Griffin radiators??? Thanks

It's pretty "backyard", but I'd have no qualms doing it temporarily to a stock shroud until you get the electric fan in.

LOL, Nick^2, i was thinking the same thing. it seems to me that David said his fan really is not needed too much with that nice radiator anyhow. wonder how you would be w/o it, if you avoid traffic.

or run the fan with no shroud (we know the efficiency would be down the toilet) - it might help enough to work for a few days.

I used the stock shroud for a while with my Griffin - I removed the clips that held the shroud on at the top on the old radiator and used them on the griffin - they don't fit perfectly - you will need to grind a little bit of the top edge of the radiator to allow the screw through - but that will stop the shroud falling down - at the bottom edge I drilled two small holes through the bottom tabs and through the bottom lip of the radiator and ran a bolt through it - you need to be careful, but it worked fine.

I dunno if your radiator is the same as mine, but mine has almost NO lip on the top... unlike the stock one that has a good inch or so of a lip... Lemme show ya a pic...

Take the clips from the stock radiator and put them on the Griffin - they won't fit exactly but the shroud will hang from it just like the stock radiator just fine - it is not particularly heavy. If you look through the screw holes of the clips, you will see you have to grind 2-3mm to allow the screw to fit - then screw it in like stock and it will hold fine - like I said - it hangs from this so not having the top of the screw surrounded by the lip is no big deal. If you do this, the bottom tabs of the shroud line up with the bottom lip - carefully drill a hole through the bottom lip/flange of the radiator and pass a small bolt - this will stop the shroud from moving up - see - does that make sense?

I got the generic 31x19 griffin radiator and drilled 4 holes in the what little lip there is and used allen bolts to bolt my stock shroud on.

I swear mine has a bigger "lip" than that...I used them to bolt the BM fan on my Griffin...surely it isn't any different...

Yeah I have no problems at all on the highway with that radiator...no need for the fan at all...it is just in traffic (low speeds or stopped especially) I have to flip the switch...if I had an overflow tank that might help because I would have more coolant...

I think you all got a different radiator, or they make them different now, because the lip is only 1/4 of an inch high... I'm not drilling that, it's too small... Here's how I fixed the problem with the black magic overflow bracket ( had to order it since the one I bought that isn't here yet didn't come with it) and it will work the same with the fan shroud.... I'm holding the radiator by the bracket about 4 feet off the ground.. I'd say it works... And the below pic is of how it's bolted on...

I have the exact same model Griffin with the tiny lip and was able to install my stock fan, shroud and overflow tank with no problems. The fan shroud actually lines up quite well with the Griffin's height. On my '90 GT there were 2 metal clips that hold the shroud to the radiator at the bottom. I reused these, they actually grip onto the Griffin better than one would think. At the top, I just drilled the radiator lip and used common hex head sheetmetal screws through the slots on the fan shroud. It's nice and soild, looks clean enough, was very simple to do and cost me all of $0.14. You'll want to carefully mock up the shroud to the radiator- in my case I put it as far to the passenger side as possible to allow more acess to the lower radiator hose.
