I installed two new speakers in the front. The mach speakers weren't handling the bass as well as I liked, so I left everything else stock and installed two Pioneer woofers, 6x8, that total 220 watts.

Now, for some reason, anytime I get any bass NEAR loud, the speakers make a 'pop' sound, and stop working completly for a few seconds. Eventually they will come back, and sometimes they 'pop' back in.

I don't know a lot about speakers and stuff, so if anybody knows what might be causing this problem, any help would be appreciated. Could it be I wired something wrong? I took the wire that came with the speakers, spliced it together with the stock wires, and wrapped them up real well with electrical tape. I put the white and black wires together, but there was another color (maybe purple and black?) that I just put with the straight 'white' wire.

For all I know, I put speakers in that are the same wattage as the mach front woofers were already. I just thought I'd give it a shot since I was getting really warbly/blatty sounding bass instead of powerful, smooth bass.

If anyone know what these symptoms sound like, let me know. Thanks!

well, here's how I wired them.

Well, I didn't wire them expertly, I'll say that much.

The two pioneer speakers came with wiring. It was two little short wires, each eith a white/black coating and a white coating. I matched up the white/black to the mustang's white/black, and hooked the white to the other color (I don't remember what it was).

Then I spliced them together by wrapping them and then putting electrical tape over them. I made sure they were very well covered and protected.

And now, when I turn up the volume, any bass near a loud level makes them both go 'pop' and then magically, no more bass. About 5 - 10 seconds later, they'll start playing again until the next loud bass sound, whatever it may be.

If you need anymore info, let me know.

Your car must have the factory Mach460 system. To discourage improvements by other than a Dealer, Ford designed the system with non-standard amp and speaker impedances. You speakers are probably overloading the amp, which then goes into self-protection mode (explains the "pop" as they are turned off).

The amp is designed to self-reset, which is why the sound comes back after a few seconds.

Another possibility is that one terminal of the speakers is grounded (connected to the frame). Most amps today are designed to drive a load that connects only across the output terminals, and cannot be grounded.

^yep that's exactly what it is. I just yanked out the whole mach system because of Fords "upgrade sabotages".

So in other words, those speakers I got are pretty much worthless? That sucks. At least I didn't spend much on them.

So, is i possible to upgrade speakers in the front at all then if Ford is so anti-upgrade?
