installed an 03 center console after picking up a tan/faun one at a good price on E-bay. Scuffed it down and prepped/painted black. I need to touch up some of the cup holder area but I want to mask that off before hitting it again. I scuffed the paint down to take some of the gloss out as it was too shiny and then used some car wax and elbow grease to dull blend any scuff marks.

I now have 2 cup holders...put in tech in case anyone has questions on swapping a console to a newer model.

Little swap info. I had to swap out the wiring from my stock console. I had to cut and splice the power jack under the arm rest (in the cubby).

On the fog light switch I had to cut a new guide notch as the console uses that for the vert switch.

The arm rest uses a male/female latch setup vs. our magnetic latch. I swapped the lower part of the arm rest to my stock black armrest. There are 2 more holes in this area...I had to leave them out. The lower still has 5-6 screws holding it to the arm pad.

Thanks, its nice knowing you can have a drink larger than a 12oz can and have a place to put it...and so can the passenger.

97?...I thought the 2 cup holder did not start until 98?

Your swap got me thinking again how much I wanted to upgrade to 2 cup holders. I like the style you have...my stock console had some broke mounting tabs, shift boot tabs, and was missing the e-brake rubber piece. Swapping to a whole new console fixes all that and I got a e-break boot. I was looking at 98-04 consoles and I picked this one up for 79$ shipped...cant beat it.

Now I am debating to pick up a new shifter bezel, thinking 99+ as they have an better (IMO) area to mount switches since the fog light and trac. control was mounted there starting in those years. I still need to mount my n2o bottle warmer and line lock switch. I think I am going to pick up one of those shift balls with a button for the line lock. Right now they are in the space under the shifter bezel.

There is a gap at the bottom in the back. it is just big enough to put your hand under the console if its flat against the carpet, so about a 1/4- but less than 1/2 in gap. I was kind of worried about it...but I rarely have someone in the back and my seats are (outside of at the track) all the way back and you cant tell as the seat covers/hides it..

I may try cutting the back off my stock console as ours have a ribbed back and the newer ones are smooth. Make like a ground effect type deal and try to glue it to the 03 console. That is if it starts to bother me.

Cool, I also have an 03 console I need to paint opal before it can go in. After you scuffed the console did you just paint it black? or did you use anything else before spraying color?

I cleaned with some hot water and soap, used dawn from under the counter. I filled a small plastic container with the water/soap mix and used a clean set of old socks (launder my old socks with holes in them to wax/wipe down the car), one for the water one to rinse/dry.

I then hit with 2-3 light coats of adhesion promoter.

The promoter said to wait 5-10min before color.

Sprayed 3-4 light coats of gloss black, tried to get it in the cup holders more but noticed buildup on the edge of the cup holders and decided I would would touch up later instead of getting runs/globs of paint on the edge. I will mask off the edge so no paint builds up on this edge when I do touch it up.

I then let it sit for a day. Scuffed lightly with a green scotch brite pad to knock down the gloss a little. I then used regular car wax and you guessed it an old sock to smooth out the scuff marks. Using a little elbow grease also knocked down the gloss a tad more in some areas.

One thing that was a PITA was the e-brake boot. It took some wiggling and slowly working the boot onto the arm to get the console to fully go down.

Advance Auto Parts. You should be able to pick it up at any auto parts store. You can also buy some really good stuff from paint supply shops. I have had good luck with the off the shelf rattle can stuff on hard plastic though.

I swapped my stock arm rest as I do not want to paint it. You can but need a flex agent. With arm sweat/heat/time I just swapped my stock pad and will never have an issue...other than a slight mis-match in the black from 17yrs (built in 93) of sun fade.

I have an 02 sitting in the garage. Was wondering how to paint it since I'm really not to great at painting things and you seemed to sum it up. My only question is whats up with the two cd players?

The lower "cd player" is actually a Sony Digital Equalizer. The top one is a Clarion CD player.

Thanks guys for the compliments and glad to help with any questions.

Ah I see it now. Couldn't tell with the glare.

A question about the shiftboot clips though, did you have to order some cause the console I have didn't have the boot and my clips are broken on the 95 one in the car.

Yeah, the pics are medium...I could enlarge them to large but they are SUPER big but you can see a lot of detail (let me set the first one in large) If others want to see them all in large let me know. The suckie thing is one time at the track my hand slipped off a 2nd to 3rd shift and my fist went right into the equalizer...with a good bit of force, the center of the display is broke and is always "lit". Still works and you can see the settings/move the settings...just sucks.

The nipple are molded on/to the bezel part of the boot there are little metal clips on the nipple part but my bezel still has all of those. Sounds like your going to need a new bezel/boot as well if the plastic nipple part is broke. The good thing is you can buy any 94-04 shift boot for a 5spd (or cobra with a 6spd). The clip location is the same as my stock boot/bezel fit right in/on.

Maybe on the 99-00, but on the '01-04 that area with those switches aren't part of the shfter bezel but part of the dash under the radio.

I could be wrong, since you have one, you would know. I thought the 99-00 had them on the bezel but if not oh well.
