Installing a MGW shifter and changin' trans. fluid

Ok, I have never changed the trans. fluid on my car, so I thought it would be a good idea to do it when I install my shifter. I hear you can do it by pouring the fluid through the shifter hole, is this true? I would prefer this method since it will be easier than pumping the fluid in. I think this is how I do it : drain fluid through drain bolt, put the bolt back in, take the fill bolt out, lower the car (on level surface), fill through the shifter hole till fluid comes out of the fill hole in trans., replace fill bolt.

My main question is when I get the shifter off is it going to be obvious where I pour in the fluid????

yeah, thats exactly how you do it. just pour the fluid in the little hole where the shifter "knob" sat. only thing is, dont fill till it pours out, fill until you can just barely see the fluid level. its best to have a buddy under the car to tell you when to stop. make sure you dont tighten the drain bolt too much too. its not a very high tq number from what i can remember. somthing around 30 ft/lbs. btw, what kinda fluid are you gonna use? i used BG Syncro Shift in mine. its aiight. i just need a tranny rebuild. fluid aint gonna fix that

Yea do it in this order.
1. Raise the car.
2. Remove the stock shifter, because with the old fluid still in there, you will easily be able to see the fluid right in the middle of where the shifter was (just incase youre having any doubts.
3. Change fluid
4. MGW install (duh).

Damn i wish i thought of doing this when i changed my shifter. Now im gonna have to do it the old pump way.

They recommend ATF fluid for our trannys. I went with Royal Purple ATF

I have a write up on the web that I did for an MGW shifter and Fluid change if intersted.

yes, I would be interested in taking a look at it. I was told by brothers performance and STEEDA that GM syncromesh was the BEST stuff to use, so thats what I went with.

It's for a 3650 so thing will be a tad different, like keeping the shift stops

no. it would take way too long unless you need to remove the shifter anyway. they get a fluid pump and hook it up to compressed air and pump the stuff in from underneath the car. techs that are good can do the job in ~25 min.

I am happy with my blue handle. takes a little more effort but the shortness is worth it.

ill have to pick the blue up some time. Currently I am waiting on the stupid UPS guy to bring the last quart of trans fluid I need, I have got the 3 now I just need the .3
