Well we are going to put them in tomorrow after church (VT stg 1s). Any instal tips? (we are NOT removing the front cover...bought a tool to keep us from having to do that) Anyone know how much a digital recording device (not vid...just sound) will cost? Something CHEAP will do, and where to get it? I want to give you guys a sound clip of the GT.....then after we finish up the new fuel system on my 66, ill post up some sound clips of that beast LOL.

Well, I don't have any tips, but I wish you luck. Stage 1 cams is something I would like to do to my car as well. Are you upgrading anything else in the motor? You have any tips for what else should be upgraded before getting Stage 1 cams? Congrats.

If you are using the AFM Tool, make sure that you FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS STEP BY STEP!! Including turning the crank after the tool is installed to make sure it locks down. Also, very, very important to crank the engine without firing after the install to make sure the adjusters "pump up". I believe you do this by turning the key with the gas pedel fully depressed. I have NOT done this install yet, but I am soon and will be doing it the same way you are. Let me know if you want to sell your tool when you are done with it.
BTW, if you have less than 36,000 miles, have no worries, cause if something screws up, put it back to stock, carry it back to your local dealer and give them one of these

I would love to see a write-up for installing cams, including the safety precautions. I would love to have the guts to do this type of install myself..

The cam install on the 4.6 is really not that hard.It is intimidating but once you do it you will wonder why you haven't done it sooner. Just mark the timing chain then line up the marks.

Ok....well the AFM tool did not come with instructions...the guy I bought it from said none were included. As far as marking, yes we are going to do that with some whiteout.
As far as tips before stg 1 cams, I would reccomend that you open up both the intake (plenum/TB/CAI...JLT RAI or the tunable induction one) and the exhaust (at least a high flow midpipe) AND GEARS to take full advantage of the cams.
Lastly, AFTER the cams PLEASE GET A TUNE! At LEAST put it on a dyno to check A/F. Stg 1s do not require springs, but if you have a high milage motor it would probably be best to buy new springs. (have 25.5K on mine) If you have full boltons you will also want some 24#-30# injectors as the limit of the stock 19s are 295-300RWHP...and thats at 95-100% duty cycle. You want the duty cycle to be in the 80s for maximum injector life.
The injector thing was just brought to my attention over at MD so I have some I am watching on ebay. I wont be getting on the car until after the dyno, will set that up next week after all my other parts arrive. Thanks for showing intrest LOL, but i was just messing with you guys...because I knew that would make you post and keep the thread bumped until I do the writeup here in a few hours.

Are you sure about the injectors and duty cycle and good to only 300whp?

Having stock injectors.....stock fuel pump and a dry nitrous kit, my 383whp and 11.2:1 A/F ratio would tend to disagree.

Hungry4horses, your about ready for cams with your current mods. I recommend doing all the minor bolton stuff(mentioned above) first because that way you only have to get a tune 1 time. Otherwise you will need/want a tune with the cams and then another after all the boltons. And you will also feel the bigest gain from the cams if you have a free flowing exhaust and intake. IMHO you need a mid pipe (LTs and O/R X would be the BEST) first, then get the cams after that.

Well go ask the gusy over at www.modulardepot.com like randystinchcomb. They will tell you the limit on a N/A car. There are people there that have capped them at around 300RWHP. Some may get a few more hp out of them. You may have 24# injectors(limit of 385 supposedly)...what colour are they? Pinks are 19s.

There is a write on the Depot also for cam install. That's what I used to do mine. Be careful with that cam washer...we dropped mine thru the chains and into the oil pan so off with the timing cover. Only added about an hour to the install but would have been nicer if we could have done without the slip up.

If you go with a more agressive cam I'd suggest degreeing them as suggested on the Depot. Just do a search over there or here to find out more info.

My cams made me run RICH...so a tune is a must. I'm going to dyno soon so I will have some updated dyno numbers to see what I gained.

LOL rich? Bet that was unexpected...better to be rich than lean though (safety). The cams are sucking in more air, it should have leaned it like it does to everyone else. And yea i printed out those writeups a few weeks/month ago. Thanks.

& also, before you crank the motor, be sure to turn the motor by hand & listen for any noises & if it feels tight. if it doesn't spin freely & make no noise, you've jumped timing, which means back to square 1 & taking the front cover off. been there, done that

Seems like it would be more of a PITA to not remove the front cover...maybe not though, I am not familiar with this AFM tool you speak of. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Id rather do it with the cover off and spend the extra time personally, thats what we did when put just the regular old pi cams in mine, you learn alot more about your car this way and you know for sure its right.

Well we are fixin (texas thing LOL) to go and instal now... there has been several big debates over at MD about the 19 in some stangs and 24s in others. And the end result is the same. Unfortunatly EVERY 99+ came with 19s, they changed colours once or twice(orange and pink) but they were all 19s. Randystinchcomb is the perfomance parts manager at a ford dealer(has his own forum section over at MD)...he also said all GT stangs came with 19s. V6s came with 24s though LOL. Crazy right.
Thanks and yea we will do that also...better safe than sorry.

not to start an arguement, but the bosch pinks are for a fact 21lbs

19 orange
21 pink
24 blue
30 red
42 green
55 brown
60 black
72/73 RC Racing Red/Black

back on topic, i started out trying to do it the way you did it, messed up & had to pull the front cover. after doing it that way i would never even think of doing it another way. because that way you can actually see the timing, & there is a much less chance that it will be off time. you shouldn't have a problem & good luck with it, just wanted to share my expeience
