Yes, that is waaaay more than enough. I use a large arbor press to press on the carrier bearings and the large pinion bearing. It shold much less than 1000lbs of press.

Use a quality clam-shell to remove the old bearings. Also, make sure you tighten up the clam-shell before you begin to prevent stripping the cage and roller from the inner race.

When pressing on make sure the bearing is being pressed straight and square to prevent the bearing from jamming. This is very important at the first inch of press.

This is very important. If you use one of those cheap ones from a discount too place it will just break and wreck your bearing.

This is very important too. I actually have a pipe I use to start the bearings before I put them in the press. If you don't get the straight they will not go on.
 
Good luck using a press to get your carrier bearings off - if you are just planning on doing the pinion bearing, then I guess that's not a problem. If you do plan on replacing the carrier bearings, you may have to use a grinder to cut them off. Use the grinder to cut the cage and them remove it and the bearings. Then use the grinder very carefully and start to cut through the bearing left on the carrier - you will have to cut it at about a 45 degree angle and just be careful you don't nick the carrier. Once you are about as deep as you dare go, take a chisel with a fairly wide tip and place that in the groove you just made with the grinder. Whack it with a hammer and the bearing should split and you can slide it off - the tip of the chisel should not bottom out in your groove if you get what I mean.
When you are installing the new bearings, use an old bearing without a cage or bearings so when you install the new bearings, you aren't putting pressure on the cage/roller bearings with the press.

To install bearings on a shaft you can also heat a metal bucket of oil up to 200 degrees F and put the bearing in it. When the bearing is at 200 degrees it will slide right on. We do this at work. Also you can use a cone heater and warm the bearing to 200 degrees. We also use cone heaters and induction heaters We have grease pens that melt at 200 and 250 for bearings. Normally 200 degrees is enough. Bearing manufactures suggest no more than 250

If you realy want to get creative turn your oven on and set to 200 put the bearing in there and let it get warmed up to 200 and it will slide on.

This is so much better than pressing it on and risking damaging the bearing.
 
I have removed and reinstalled carrier bearings with a gear puller and my 12 ton Harbor Freight press. If it wont pull them, something else is wrong.

How do you set it up to pull the bearing? The press comes with a C shaped device that you screw each side in under the bearing. With the pinion bearing then you can push the pinion straight down with the press and the bearing slides off.

With the carrier I think you can get the C shaped bearing puller on the bearing, but how are you pushing the carrier down? It's not that the press won't pull them, it's setting it up to pull them that I couldn't figure out. Cutting them off took about 5 minutes.
