Installing new exhaust, any help?

Automatic 95GT (100,000miles).

I just received my new Flowmaster Cat Back Exhaust and am going install it this weekend. I've never done exhaust work before and have a friend who is going to help me. He knows more than I do but neither of us are pros. I just wanted to see if there are any key pointers I should know before starting the project. We're just removing the stock exhaust and placing the Flowmaster on. Thanks for any help or suggestions ahead of time.

Putting on a cat back is one of the easiest things to do on our cars. It is very straight forward and you should have no problems. Should take you an hour to do.

Be sure to use a sawz-all or an exhaust pipe cutter to cut the tailpipes behind the mufflers. Other than that, like JR said; it's straight forward and easy.

Thanks for the replies. I'm excited about getting it put on. Do you mean cut the tailpipes behind the mufflers so we can remove the current exhaust or is there something else that needs to be cut? Thanks again.

Yep, that's exactly what I mean... Did you get the american thunder or the Force II catback?

I went with the American Thunder, need both power and sound We opened the box last night and it looks pretty easy. Flowmaster.com also has a short installation video. I'm sure it will be no problem (hopefully didn't jinx myself)

I also meant to ask, will we need any type of welding done? Either to cut off or for installation? Maybe thats what the sawzall is for. I didn't think we would need welding but I wasn't sure.

Just installed a catback on my brothers car this weekend. Very easy. The only thing you will need to cut is the old tailpipes right after the muffler. You shouldnt need to weld anything.

here's a tip for you - the night before you do it, park your car where you'll be working on it. Exhaust gets very hot and you dont want to drive somewhere first. After you pick your spot, look under your car and find the two flanges where the cat-back connects to the mid pipe. There are two big bolts on each flange. Soak them like crazy with liquid wrench the night before you work on it. This will give the lubricants time to set into the bolts. Getting those 4 bolts off was by far the hardest part of installing the exhaust for me anyway.

Very true, especially considering how long those bolts have been on there. You might also want to spray some lube on the rubber hangers to help the old stuff slide out.

it's just a simple BOLT-ON instalation... it took me about 2 days, on my own... but we had a couple of problems...

-first, make sure it fits before you tighten anything down

-check your flow tubes for the correct bends in them, one of mine was missing a bend, so the muffler was hitting the drive shaft, and the frame, so watch out for that too...

-don't get frustrated... it can be very annoying at times... but for the most part, if you have a generic idea, it's quite simple... especially for the catback... the H pipe is even easier... that only took me a couple of hours...

When I did mine, I had a dickens of a time with sliding out the hangers, until I took the sawzall to them too, cut the little button heads off the hangers and they push right through...

I also had a though time with the hangers this weekend. The hangers on the Machs are a pain so I just unbolted them from the car so I could pull them out while I wasnt on my back under the car. Saved me a lot of time.

Thanks so much for the help guys. Me and my friend installed the exhaust on Sunday and it worked great. I have to re-tighten one of the bolts because the drivers side tailpipe is hitting the frame a bit but otherwise it is perfect. I really like the sound and am happy with the exhaust. Thanks again.

I installed the same kit on my car and encountered the same problem with the bolts coming undone.

Go to the HomeDepot and but some new nuts, and some lock washers. The stock flimsy locking washers are crap.

Might even use thread lock once they are on there for good.

I even considered welding the pipes together, but you might wanto to remove the pipes sometime in the summer for loudness, your call.

Installing new exhaust, any help?
