Installing new Lifter questions

I am in the process of replacing my intake manifold gasket and was wondering what it would take to replace the lifters while I am in there. Is it a simple process of pulling the old ones out and putting new ones in? I am running a 428cj and the ford manuals make it appear as a simple switch. Would I need to replace pushrods or do any adjustments? Would I need to know the specific cam installed? Thanks for all your help.

What's wrong with the lifters you have?

When the engine is cold I can hear a slight tapping sound coming from cyl number 1 or 2 area. Its hard to tell which one. The noise seems to get lower after the engine gets up to operating temp. I am assuming that this is a lifter tap. I will be getting the manifold off soon and pull those lifters. I don't know how to tell if its bad or not, so the thought was just to replace them all.

I'd leave em alone. If they get loud, then think about replacing them. If it's got adjustable rockers, you can tighten them up a bit. Problem is with the FE adjustable rockers is they have an interference fit thread and the threads can get worn in from frequent adjustments, at that point they need to be replaced.

And have fun with that 95 lb intake. You really should use an engine hoist to set it back in place. It's damned near impossible to do without disturbing the gaskets and trying to stab the bypass hose at the same time just by lifting it without a hoist.

I agree, leave them alone, or at most, adjust them. Replacing them may not even solve the problem.

Thanks I will leave the lifters as they are, its a low tap at this time. BTW I did buy a chain hoist to get that manifold out and it worked like a dream. I knew it was at least 75lbs and getting it back in without a gasket leak will be nearly impossible.

Smart man ! Smarter than I was 25 years ago when I fought that battle. Standin on the inner fenders while lowerin that first CJ iron intake onto the 390 in a 67 Stang. Bought me an aluminum PI intake first chance I got. Lost 50 somethin pounds with that swap.
