insurance question

ok so im gettin the stang heres the deal. i want to no if i am right

me and my friend are trading cars.. were gonna write out bills of sale etc heres the deal.. can i insure the stang while its still insured under his name and he does the same with my buick . thenhe signs his car over to me vise versa i register the mustang he registers my buick and i drop my buick from my ins and he drops the stang and were good right? by the way im in nys and im lookin to jus transfer the buicks plates

Depends on state law really.

Here in MA, you have 7 days to trasnfer your insurance to your new vehicle. So you just put your old plate and reg on, carry a copy of the bill of sale and notify your insurance to begin the transfer process.
