intake manifold question

what is the difference between the upper and lower intake manifold, and are they sold as one piece or two. I was also looking at two different ones, the Ford Racing 94-95 Cobra, and the Edelbrock Performer. between those two which has more power, which costs more, and which is the better value? I really like the cobra one because of the 5-Liter Cobra plate on the top of it. but which one do you guys thing is better

The lower is the portion that bolts to the heads. It also has water jackets in it for cooling. It actually distributes the air to the cylinders.

The upper bolts to the lower and has the throttle body bolted to it. It takes the air from the TB and acts as a holding area for distibution to the lower. This helps smooth out the air and works better for N/A EFI applications.

Usually, a manifold is sold with both pieces, upper and lower. Occasionally however, it's just one piece but will say it's just a lower or just an upper.

The Cobra is a very good manifold, but the edelbrock flows better.

You can find a used cobra intake on ebay pretty cheap. I opted for the cobra because I liked the way it looked and it does flow pretty well. The edelbrock flows a little more but are not found used as much as the cobra.

If I were doing it again, I think I might choose the Cobra over the Edelbrock. You can get the Cobra ported so that it flows damn good (enough for an H/C/I 302 at least), and it doesn't have a bolt in the middle of the upper intake...

(yes, I really do hate that bolt. I almost want to get an RPM upper so I never have to deal with it again).

Probably a bit of both. It takes 10 or 15 minutes to get that bolt out, because you can only turn it a sixteenth of a turn at a time. And because it has threadlock on it, you have to use a wrench until it is all the way loose. And it's so tight in there that it's hard to work your hand in there to get it started when you're putting it back in.

See, told ya I hated that bolt. The eddy performer is the only intake I know of that makes you reach inside of it for a frickin' bolt...

They dont all have that plaque. Some of them come with the "Ford Motorsport SVO" plaque on it. It's still the same intake though. You can buy a 5.0L Cobra plaque somewhere, I just can't remember where.

You don't need to thread lock that bolt, and if your constantlly removing the upper it woud be a pain in the arse. It takes me 2- 4 minutes to remove it.

you dont need to thread lock that bolt but I did, and would do it again if I took it off...I wouldnt want that thing backing out of the hole INSIDE of my intake manifold...thats lights out for your motor...i threadlocked the crap out of mine lol....

i do agree with you though dave, thats one drawback to the performer...

If I went with the used cobra intake, how many miles is too many for a used one, is there anything wrong with used manifolds, and how much should i expect to pay for a used cobra upper and lower

A ratchet wrench with that plenum bolt takes about 15 seconds to remove.

Get the Performer it's a great intake.

idk about the performer, i have the cobra and i did notice an increase after the 3000 range. my problem is that i have the stock exhaust on so it's not working to it's full potential, but since you do have exhaust, you will notice an increase. i don't think mileage really matters, or maybe it does. as long as the intake isn't broken or cracked it should be good to go

I don't have that intake, but one of my ratchets has a t-handle at the end, that allows me to twist it and remove bolts after first breaking it loose in the "normal" manner. I would think that it would make short work of that bolt. I seem to have gotten it at WalMart, of all places, years ago, and use it ALL the time.
