Well now that I have all my panels out of the car, I am going to start prepping and painting the interior pieces and center console. I plan on washing them off with some dish soap and water in a tub, prep them with some spray on adhesive promoter, and then spray on 3 coats of paint...unless otherwise advised.

I understand that the doors and dash will need alot more work, and will cross that bridge when I get to it...

The question is, if I am painting all the panels black, aside from the dash and center console which will be white, what paint should I use for the fiberglass, plastics, and metal? Will something like Rustoleoum aerosol work for the black panels since it's easier to match or is it too glossy? I would like to do it right the first time so that I never have to do this again...

Appreciative of all the assistance!

Paint

Well, I gues it depends on the car. For instance I have a 67 fastback with Deluxe interior, so all panels are black. I just got finished painting all interior panels, fiberglass, metal fold down seats, roof metal panels, etc. MY body guy painted my door insides and dash metal with a semigloss or satin black. I wanted to match pretty close to that. I used Krylon Fusion Satin Black. Below is a link to it so you can see what it is. It is meant to bond to plastics, so I wanted to use it on all plastic and fiberglass pieces. I used it on the metal pieces though as well and it worked great. All fiberglass panels, plastic seatbacks, and metal trim pieces got this and now it all matches.

Like you, I washed all pieces in soap and water first. The textured pieces, such as interior quarter panels and seat backs, tend to get dirt in the grooves. I took a fingernail brush and brushed soapy water in there and scrubbed them. I then dried them off, and sanded certain pieces if they were not textured and I didn't run the risk of removing factory texturing. After sanding, or if they weren't sanded, I would then wipe down all pieces lightly with Acetone to remove any remaining dirt, (be sure to use this sparingly as acetone literally MELTS plastic and fiberglass, wet down a rag with very little and wipe parts very lightly) and then let them dry, then hung them and painted several coats on each piece. Some metal pieces which had a chance of rust, I used rust preventative rustoleum on first, then I sprayed this over top.

ONE MORE REMINDER ABOUT THE ACETONE, IN CASE YOU NEVER USE IT. IT WILL MELT PLASTIC AND / OR FIBERGLASS PIECES. MY ADVICE IS TO GET A PIECE OF PLASTIC THAT YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT AND WIPE IT DOWN TO SEE WHAT IT DOES BEFORE YOU USE IT ON FINISHED CAR PARTS.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. I would be happy to post pics of my panels if you needed. Thanks.

Bishop-
Is it a true black when compared to the carpeting/seats, or does it appear greyish?
How many cans would I need to do the interior panels, doors, and A-pillars?
Would you recommend this over the PPG matched products that NPD sells?
If you have any pictures of the results, it would be much appreciated.

How many coats of paint do the parts typically need and how long should I wait between coats?

Thanks in advance!

Paint

I took a couple pictures of some finished interior pieces, metal and fierglass laying across the new fold down seat rear carpet that is black so you could see. In comparison, they are both very dark. The pieces don't look grey at all to me. If you would like more pictures let me know and I can take some more. I would say, depending on what you paint, you will use around 10 + cans. I painted all fold down rear seats and trap door with it too though. This may not be the case for you. This paint tends to go on thin, so I ended up doing 3 - 4 coats per item, depending on what it is. I felt this paint matched very well to the original black that was on the fiberglass panels, but that is just me. Again, let me know if you need further info.
