IPOD in a car help

I love this solution, I have been waiting for this forever. Does anyone know if you can put your MP3's on the IPOD or is it only through ITUNES that you can load it?

Now if they only had an interface for my 2002 F250 head unit, I would be in heaven.

That's pretty sweet.....couldnt you just use an input jack on a head unit? I've had a couple that have them on the face, so you can just plug an input from an MP3 player right into them. Either way it's pretty cool, although i'd be more inclined to get a Kenwood Music Keg....40gb of space means you can hold a good amount of tunes, and you can definately use your own MP3s off your computer.

Right now i'm using a Sony MP3 compatible head unit, so i just burn MP3s onto disks...i can get on average about 8 albums per CD, sometimes less since i have a lot of high bit rate MP3s. I have a 30 disk holder on my visor, so basically i can hold about 240 albums in my car at any given time. I still want the Keg though so i dont have to have the visor.

I am sure that I can find inputs, but I want to be able to tuck the IPOD away and use the head units to controll everything. If the music keg had a removable harddrive it would be an easy choice. I know a lot of choices are coming out, I'll just keep my eyes open.

A couple of my friends have what I believe is called an iTrip, it's a little radio transmitter that plugs in on top of the iPod. You set your radio to whatever freq you decide, and the iTrip broadcasts your iPod to that freq within a limited radius. I think they're $30 or so.

The Kegs are removeable...i havent played with them myself but a friend of mine has one in his 'stang and he pulls it out all the time to swap files from his computer. He has like 40gb on his Keg but something close to 80gb of music on his computer so he switches stuff around sometimes. With 40gb of space, the only reason you'd ever have to pull it out is to add something to it.


Has anyone seen/heard of a head unit that can rip CDs yet? Talk about kicking massive arse....a head unit with a built in hard drive that can rip CDs....


I just want my computer in my car....lol Ya know what, i bet i could rig up a small computer to my car's sound system....like a laptop or something. The only thing i'm unsure of is whether it could handle the vibrations or not. I've got a micro machine style computer that's smaller than my monitor that i could build a custom enclosure for....aaaah the gears are turning. I just need to upgrade my electrical system in the car like crazy for it to handle the power of the PC.

Can't be done with the ipod. MAC is working with BMW to make one that interfaces with the factory head unit controls, but I doubt you will ever see them do it for Ford.

I've used it on a road trip, and it really sucked. The sound quality was nothing like a pressed CD, and every half hour we had to mess with it because the channels changed from town to town. PIA. Not to mention that for those who care, cosmetically it looked really, really gay. Without a doubt, the best way is to plug it right into the RCA input jacks, if you have them. Some do come with remotes, so you could tuck it away and still mess with it.

You shouldn't have any charging problems, they don't use that much. I run a 40GigHD/2.4GH laptop with a 17" screen in my car, watch a DVD on it plugged into the cigarette lighter for juice and my alternator doesn't even flinch- and my charging system is seriously under powered for the stuff it has to run in my car. My PC is a thirsty one too- it uses the special order BIG power plug on the auto/air adaptor. Don't know about vibration problems from a perminant mount though- I'm sure someone makes a laptop that can take it, but I wouldn't want to pay for it...

I have the IPOD hooked up in my car. I just purchased a head-unit with auxillary input, got an RCA to Mini-jack connector, and that was that.

I've officially got an even 75gb right now, and that's just "music", not counting tons of funny sound clips i have. I've got 11,098 Mp3s of music, but i'm pretty sure i've got a few albums to add to that.

Music is only second to my son and my car...lol

This is a good platform for a custom Car PC. If you stay around 800 mhz (plenty for mp3/wmp playback), you dont even need a cooling fan. Check out some of the projects on that page. They are really sweet. I have a old CD player I plan to make into a digital picture scrapbook computer for the living room totally stealth and quiet.

Note that this is a euro based site. There are sites here in the states that sell this stuff so that you dont have to worry about international fraud.

If I had my preferences, I would stay with the ford head unit. I like stealth and sleepers. If I had to go with an alpine unit, I think I could live with myself. It will be a little while before I go in any direction. In fact finding mode now.

The Alpine Ai-NET solution is obviously workable, but the PAC audio interface is not for ipod that I know of- they are not typical mp3 format at all. If it doesn't say it's made for ipod, then it isn't- but let me know if you find any more facts
