so, I was flipping the channels and saw the start of the Indy 500 on espn classic. I decided to watch some of it since I've never really watched open wheel racing.

All I can say is WOW!

People that say this is better then NASCAR... what are you all thinking?

Announcer: "wow, look how close those cars are together! They are nose to tail, 2 to 3 car lengths apart" :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

I saw little to any side by side racing, hardly any passing, no bumping, no nothing. Just single file racing with everyone 3 cars apart :notnice:

Wtf does it mean when they say they are going 352kph? Last I checked, Indianapolis is in mother ****ing America :flag: , not sissy euro-metric land :notnice:

The cars sound funny. They don't sound like real mother ****ing AMERICAN :flag: V8's. They don't even look like cars. They look like space ships with big black globs at each corner  They all look the same. Sure, some are different colors, but there's so little body to them, you can't tell who is who

so, to sum it up, NASCAR > IRL

Open wheel racing & stock car racing are two different animals. I like both.

F1 is probably my favorite of the two. In F1 qualifying is as or more exciting than the race because it actually means something. The car on the pole can & often does run off and leave the rest of the field, no phantom debris cautions giving the others a chance to catch up, I like that. Because of many factors it's hard to pass on most F1 circuits, so if passing is your thing F1 isn't for you. F1 is more about lap times that's where your opportunity to pass comes, example lets say your in 2nd place and not able to pass the leader but your car is capable of running better lap times the leader pits you "push" to run lap times that will put you out ahead of the leader after you pit. You get all this info on the screen and from the commentator you know what sector and lap times the driver needs to run to pull this move off. Also the drag race to the 1st turn can be very dramatic. Like I said, I like both but they are very different.

BTW the IRL/Cart split all but ruined open wheel racing in the U.S.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I despise NASCAR.

If you want the wheel-to-wheel racing in a close-quarters, high risk environment of NASCAR with the speed, money and driving talent of F1, I suggest you start watching MotoGP. No pit strategy, tire changes, fuel stops - one start and one checkered flag.

MotoGP is racing.

motogp? Isn't that motorcycles ????

here's my deal.. if I can't watch it on a major network channel, or can't pick it up over the air, I'm not interested.

Yah, new things are generally bad news...

The 2006 Laguna Seca MotoGP race was aired on ABC. That was the race all the American Hollywood types showed up for.

NASCAR has become a joke. Junior, or Jimmy Johnson is about to go a lap down? Never fear a "debris on the track" caution will save them. NASCAR you can beat and bang on someone to win, INDY/F1 racing you have to actually be able to drive and pass someone to win. Besides, INDY fans don't Budwieser beer cans when a fav driver doesn't win.

I spent today lazy as poop watching a little of all. As an avid motor sports enthusiast & mechanical/automotive engineering savant, I hold no negative opinion on any of them and can find love for them all. True love holds no bias.

May 28th taped Grand Am GS KONI Challenge from Lime Rock, Ct.
Catalunya Grand Prix - Moto GP
Indy at PIR
NASCAR @ Pocono

Dew - I agree 100% that the Australian V8 supercar racing is some of the best racing around.

I agree to some extent, even though it didn't hold true this weekend. Jimmie had a blow out, was spewing tires and pieces of car all over, yet they didn't throw the caution flag

right, the 2 passes they make the whole race, as they are spread out 2-5 seconds apart? boring.. give me beating and banging

Besides, INDY fans don't Budwieser beer cans when a fav driver doesn't win.

those are just idiots at Dega. I went once, and will never go there again :notnice:

what would Indy fans throw? Perrier bottles? :p

I think Tony George killed open wheel racing in the US with his Indy 500 crap he pulled in the 90s. I never liked the IRL and probably never will. I am a fan of the Champ Cars though but even they have been toned down and aren't as exciting as the 90s since they crippled the newer engines to 700hp instead of over 1000hp.

The only NASCAR I care to watch is the superspeedway races (MIS, Fontana, Daytona, Talledega). The rest off the tracks are just low speed boredom.

I do love F1 but wish there was more action during the race instead of the cars being so far apart on lap times the whole race.
