IRS wheel-hop...

Im now about a week or so from buying a Cobra and, after looking a little more in depth, am leaning toward '01's. Drove one...loved it. I've also been having some troubles finding nice, low mile '98's in the market.

Only thing I am worried about is the ever dreaded independent suspension - are there any quality products out there to help plant the tires on these cars? Anything else I should keep an eye out for? The car will, most likely within year one, be supercharged and I'm a relative IRS rookie...other than that I know almost everything is costly.

I got a 99 cobra and finally just replaced the IRS. With my blower, I just had enough wheel hop BS and also I got tired of pouring money into all the new anti-wheel products. I could not defeat it.

Either way these are good options

1) Build your blown stang off the 98 cobra. The 98 has the solid rear axle. Another great drag car base is the MACH I. This is really the same car as a 99 or 01 cobra, it has the same 4V engine as a 99/01. That will cost more that finding a good 98 cobra. Also the MACH I has a solid rear axle.

2) If you really want the 99+ body style, then buy the 01 or even a 99, and find someone local with a 99 GT or higher that wants to swap you for that IRS. Many 99+ cobra owns go this route too. I happend to find a 2000 GT in a junk yard and bought the rear end.

Whatever you do, DO NOT pour your money into any anti-wheel hop BS products. I got years of expenses and frustrations to back me up on this. Bite the bullet and pull the IRS out of that that 01, use the money for this. I waited until 2004 to add a solid axle to my 99 (I bought it new). Big mistake.

I got QA1 adjustable rear shocks and have no wheel hop. Still cant launch for **** at the track...bog or spin but no hop hehehe

so far with the shocls set on 4 (nice and soft) on the street no hop either..that may change as the temps go down.

I am swapping out the IRS for a solid axle though. That along with 3:73s or maybe 4:10s are the next mod...actually a trailer and winch is the next mod

...so a couple opinions both ways with the long term solution being a live axle swap. would i be better of spending a couple extra thousand and picking up an '03 mach 1 (again, with the idea a '98 cobra doesnt pop up)? i really have been set on a Cobra but might expand my search if its that much better a performance foundation.

and just out of curiosity, can you supercharge a mach 1 with the shaker hood set up the way it is?

again...thanks to all. i dont mean to be mr. 20 questions but this will be reasonably big expenditure for me and i want to be happy in the long run with my decision.

yea you can supercharge a mach. they aren't exactly as boost friendly as a GT though, because their compression is higher. but you can run a centri blower and a good tune and make some pretty awesome numbers.

I got the 03 cobra bilsteins, KB IRS support brace with aluminum bushings, the rear shock tower brace, and a few other std KB products (matrix brace etc.) and I can say so far I don't know of any wheel hop on my car.

I sooner then later also plan to get the KB rear steer kit which is suppose to help with that hop even more.
