is $500 too much to pay for gear install?

I have been quoted $499 for the gear(3.73s or 3.90s), installation, royalpurple, fiction modifier, and speedo calibration. I really need this upgrade in my bullitt because they all come with 3.27s :notnice: . I was curious if this sounds high to any of you here. I am just about willing just to pay......cuz I need them.

Also: Any suggestions with respect to gear selection would be appreciated. I drive the car 1-2 days a week, and want to maintain drivabiliity.

that is extremely to much. for the gears, clutch kit for my posi unit and all the berings in the car it was 125. this man also gave me a warranty. He had to do all of that stuff and only charged me 125. The average person charges 150 to 200 not 500.

That's about what I paid. If you can find it for less, great, but my gambit was from $500 on up to $1600. And that was just for labor. Ended up paying a friend $200 for his time. I say do it if you trust the installer.

Including everything, as Nick listed (READ people), $500 is probably about the going rate. I was quoted $400 for gears and labor, but then surprise, surprise...listed on the invoice (with additional charges) was shims, friction modifier, and Royal Purple gear oil (well, at least he put in the good stuff!) Still, I can't complain. Best performance mod, hands down.
FRPP doesn't make 3.90s...and do not buy anything but FRPP gears.
So, your choice ends up between 3.73s and 4.10s...for something you only drive once or twice a week? 4.10s!!! Enjoy!!!

Gear install prices are always funny, the dealerships will always quote 10 hours labor...right at $700(just labor). The job if done correctly nd shims checked and rechecked and gear pattern checked right. its gonna take 4-5 hours at least. Since a good shops hourly rate is at least 50-75 dollars...

$500 labor and parts sounds like a great deal.

PS, I'm having Young Ford install my 4.10s and aluminum DS. They guarentee no whine, gears are something that just have to be done right. I dont mind paying a little extra for the peace of mind if it whines...they are fixing it again. They will even install my new Trick Flow diff cover :) I was very pleased they gave me no hassle about the work. FRP gears and AL DS plus some kit and labor is $1050....go ahead flame..i dont care... I want it done right. I Diablo Delta to handle the speedo calbration.

I paid 225 for install. I wont believe anything about dealers doing it better. The boys at Mustang Magic do more gear swaps in a week than a dealer does in a year. It shouldnt take many hours either, its really fairly simple. My gears and pulleys were done in about 2 hours total and I havent the slightest vibration or gear noise.

yep Mustang Magic definitely knows what they are doing when it comes to gears and they do it all for under 400 also. :nice:

Yeah, its 325 or 375 or something if they supply the gears, but I already had mine.

I'm sorry... but you'd have to be retarded to spend a grand on the install of gears and a driveshaft. WTF? Did I read that wrong!!!!!?
