Yes. Most of the 96-99 models had 5w30.

Same here, I run the Mobil15w30 Extended Performance, without any oiling issues here in FL.

I also use Mobil1 5w30 Extended Performance. She seems to run a little smoother with the 5W30.

I also use Mobil1 5W-30 EP. Most Mustang owners use Mobil1 (based on poll results on various forums). The clueless ones that fall for marketing hype run Royal Purple...

All it would do is hurt your gas mileage some. On my 2008 4.6, the book says to run 5W 20W so thats what I put in it.

I ran 5w30 Royal Purple because I could never find 5w20. Used it for 9 months with no problems. But it was to expensive.....costing me $60 for 5 quarts and an oil filter. I just go with Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w20

I heard the actual recommended oil for the 4.6 is 5W-30 but ford wanted higher mpg so put it as 5w-20 in the books.

5w20 is too thin for my liking, especially if you are beating on the car as the oil thins at higher temperatures.

I run 5w30 (book calls for it, it's a Windsor motor) and recently started putting 6 quarts in as opposed to 5 (which the book calls for).

+1 if you beat on the engine you want thicker oil.

Is anyone using a oil temperature gauge? I'd like to see how hot it gets with synthetics vs. dino.

Yes, on the early 4.6's Ford specified 5w-30 and switched to 5w-20 to help with their CAFE guidlines. The specs on the engines were still the same. For this reason I've always run 5w-30. Mobil1 5w-30 EP.
