Is a catback worthwhile?

Like the title says, is a catback worthwhile? I have the stock catback with flows welded in - I'm really wondering if it's causing a restriction and robbing me of power with only 1/4" difference in pipe diameter. Mods are in my sig.

with your mods I would say yes. I would think switching to a 2.5 catback with a stait through muffler would give you power. you have to remeber that you factory pipe is not mandrel bent. you could potential gain .5" in some places.

somewhere recently I read that Tim at T & J tuned a supercharged 99+ and said that the stock catback with flows welded in was restricting the car...but I think the car had the stock manifolds and h pipe with 4 cats too...but that car was pushing close to 500 hp so I think you might be ok for now.

Thanks for the replies. I'm kind of grasping here because I have about everything done n/a (short of the bullitt intake) and I think there's more in the car. Just trying to isolate possible opportunities to take advantage of them.

JonJon - you got it, man! I am running out of reasonable things to do... the time is going to be spent saving for changes rather than making them. There are still a lot of little things to do - weld axle tubes and torque boxes, etc. Three major projects remaining - bullitt or aftermarket intake, forged bottom end and blower.

BTW, is the gayest smiley ever???? What's up with the "queer eye" smiley's anymore?

Get you a straight-thru Magnaflow catback system

Sack up and get the Bassani. It makes me smile everyday. You'll feel the catback in the 3500+ RPM's zone, and wonder why you waited so long. Although it is only .25" bigger, the bends are smoother and the growl is much more distinctive. They drone just as much as your flows, but let out a much louder tone.

i'm not trying to convice you to by a certain product. Go with what you like best sound and quality wise.. They all pretty much give you the same power.. The straight through design might give you a wee-bit more power. But if the chambered kind sounded 100X better to me, hell that's what I'm going to get. And yes, with your mods, you will benefit from larger diameter pipes as it will decrease the restrictive exhaust flows..

Catback should be good for you. Magnaflow rocks, I wouldn't use anything else.

A quarter of an inch doesn't sound like much, but the cross section area of a 2.25" inch pipe is about 4 square inches, and the cross section of a 2.5" pipe is about 4.9 square inches. Thats about 23% more area for the exhaust to flow through, so I say its worth it.

These are solid replies - thanks. I'll take it from this that there are benefits to a catback with my set-up. Obviously, with the money I've got invested so far, a good catback to open up the exhaust won't hurt too much.
