I need a midpipe for my car thanks to an aquaintance who sold me (albeit cheaply) an H pipe with welded in cats that does not fit due to the drivers side cat hitting the floor board. I put the word out for another one and I have two friends with mid pipes for sale. One is a regular H pipe for $50 and the other is a Pro Chamber for $100. Is the power gain and sound from the Pro Chamber worth paying double the $$ over a normal H? It is a little nicer than the H, though. My car is totally stock engine-wise. What is everyones opinion??? Thanks.

Don't buy into the power gain BS....i've ran all 3 options for mid pipes and they're all pretty much the same....any gains are going to be insignificant. Also the inside of the PC is essentially a big fat X anyways....

Get ready for 100 opinions on H vs. X.....so i'll go first and say just get an X. (unless you want the used H...i'd honestly rather have an H than the PC...biggest waste of money i've ever spent on exhaust parts).

if it's in the budget go with the pc. like 85 said, it's like a fat x. 100 isn't bad at all, heck I'd buy it if I knew where it was for that much. I have one on and know some guys who want one.

Way back in the day, like 1998 MM&FF did an article on the two of them. Over stock cat h-pip the non cat h-pipe picked up 11 rwhp, the power chamber picked up 23 rwhp and the X picked up 24 rwhp. The only trade off between the X and pro/power chamber was 1 ft lb of torque.

So even though the X made one more hp, it have up 1 ft lb of torque to the prochamber.

The pro and X are proven to beat the H time and time again by a solid 10 hp.

Was the car otherwise stock save for the exhaust? An H/C/I car is going to show much larger gains than a stock 5.0 and a forced induction car even more. If i were to guess, I would think that adding an off road pipe will never add more than 10hp to a stock 5.0, and around the neighborhood of 5 is more like it. However, I could be wrong.

I am going with the PC anyway...I have had more than my fair share of cars with off road H pipes, and I wanna go for something different. The PC is $300 new, so $100 for one will work for me.

Alright here is my half a$$ comparison b/w what I had and have.

The same motor. Only changes to the car other than exhaust was 5lug discs (94-95 GT stuff) and 18" wheels over 17s.

Old exhaust was Mac LTs, Prochamber, and Mac catback through tailpipes. Car made...
-272/316.

New exhaust was same headers, VRS X pipe, and Spintech mufflers dumped. Car made...
-258/295.

get a prochamber if you want to be quiet. My friend has MAC with a prochamber and I have MAC with the X and my car screams over his car.

X pipes have a sound of there own. Chambers have a much deeper sound to them where the X's sound out on the higher RPMs.

Yes, the cars had H,C, I already done to them.

25thmustang i wouldve of been pissed of those numbers came back for me. I know after breaking in a exhaust system its tone changes slighty, think #'s would change slighty causes thats a decent change to piss anybody off.....

I was told by people on this site that those differences could be just dyno issues, but I feel it is a combo of the bigger wheels/brakes and the slightly worse flowing exhaust (maybe). I don't know what caused it, can only share my findings...

But on a plus note the car with 272/316 ran 12.999 @ 107.62 with a 2.06 60', on 17" Falkens with skinnies up front.

With 258/295 in very very similar conditions at the same race 2 years later it went 12.954 @ 106.07 with a 1.91 60' on the 18" Falkens with 18s up front.

I was surprised, car ran a solid mph less sometimes closer to 1.5 mph, and still managed to duplicate the old times, and surpass them with slightly better 60's!

25th...i think you have a few too many undetermined variables there to make any solid conclusions. I think your slightly quicker times were due to the quicker 60' time...but that 1.5mph is probably due to that drop in power combined with the increased wheel/brake mass. IIRC you are running a pretty big rear tire now...285 i believe? What size tires were you running previously on the 17's?

For the extra couple ponies i would spend the 100 bucks and get the prochamber. Like everyone said its basically an X pipe inside. 100 bucks for a PC in good condition is still a good deal. Plus everyone and their mother has an OR H pipe on their stang. Go with something a little different sounding.

I agree completely, this is why I share what happened to me as best I can without giving reasons for it. I have NO idea why the car made the power or ran the times, I just know it did. The new tires are 285s, but the contact patch is not what it should be... I would say the contact patch is similar to a 245-255 maybe... I have a picture I should share to show it. I will grab that later, old rims were 17x9 Cobra Rs with 245/45/17 Falkens.

The 2.06 60' I ran very similar to on one pass and went 13.0 @ 105 (maybe 106) this past time on the 18s.

Again I liked the prochamber, like the X pipe, I just in my opinion feel the prochamber was worth a few more hp.
