Is it normal for the timing hash marks to move?

I'm about to reset the timing on my car manually (it's not starting at the moment), but before that I noticed that after everytime I cranked the engine to try and turn the car on, and then go check the timing hash marks, they have moved. Is this normal?

I just want to make sure before I go through this trouble of trying to do it by hand and it turns out I need a new balancer.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

If I'm understanding your post correctly, yes that's normal. The balancer (where the timing marks are on) moves WITH the crank, so as you're turning over and turning over, you're moving the timing marks. You have to set it at top dead center to begin resetting it. You're balancer should be just fine. Check for a wobble when the car stays running, and also look for rubber coming out of the back end of it (side closest to the block).

Make sure you pull the SPOUT connector out of it's little plug first.

And if you don't, your timing advance is probably going to change with every flash of the timing light. You'll never get it set correctly that way.
