is it possible to use big block rockers on my sbf?

pretty much stock 66 c code 289 heads

basically im looking for a cheap improvement on power
eventually, im going to get some aluminum heads, and roller rockers and stuff
but ive got to fix my transmission first, so im looking for something to tie me over for a while

my cam has lift currently in the 448 and 470ish range

would new springs be needed, if the change is at all possible...


cant get a new cam, well, because its too much work
and atm, i have an automatic with stock stall

new heads - too expensive

roller rockers - ive been told wont work on my heads

any suggestions/comments?

get a pair of headers. They give good power and are cheap too.

big block rockers won't work. The best mods to do are stuff like intake, headers, carb., ignition. Mainly because they don't really wear out and can be reused whenever you build the another engine. Its not gonna cost you anymore to buy it now than it will later on. If you can't afford it, just keep saving until you can do it right.

Preach on brother. That's how I look at it, too. Buy stuff now, that won't wear out and that you can still use later.

thanks for the suggestions

sorry i didnt specify earlier, but i have most other normal bolt ons - headers, intake, pertronix module, msd 6a, hipo coil, k&n, shift kit (in busted tranny)
performer cam

i guess, it seems ive nickeled and dimed my way out of stuff to get... and ill just have to wait for the good stuff

*i realize that my first post might have been confusing, because i said "stock"
but i meant that the heads were pretty much stock (besides valve job)

What is the date code on your heads? If they're early 66 heads, then roller rockers will work. If they're later ( may 66-up) then you've got rail rockers and as far as I know, no one makes roller style rail rockers.

I believe Comp makes some roller tipped 'rail' rockers.

Jonstantine, I know what you mean. I've done about everything I can do to mine too, short of going all out. Oh well, that just means its time for another project car!
