Is it supposed to be like this in the distributor hole?

I am fixing an oil leak on a car I bought about 1 month ago and while I was doing the bolting down the bolts to 25 ft lbs one of the bolts snapped so I had to pull it back off and while I was doing that I leaned over the distributor hole and seen that the think that the distributor sits on looks broken, and was wondering if it would hurt the car to run like that? Here are some pics to help explain what I saw.

You have that motor apart and putting it back together and your not sure if that looks correct.... First off that "hole" is not any part of the dizzy. The oil pump is driven by the shaft at the end of the dizzy. This shaft goes into the engine block through "this hole" so it can meet the oil pump drive shaft. Sorry but im just concerned about the poor motor. I will help though with what I can, what are your plans having it apart like that??

when you go to stab the dizzy the shaft will line back up just fine

Well if you look down in there its not a smooth machined cut it looks as if a peice was broken off. Sorry if you are concerned about my knowledge but I havent owned a car with a distributor since I was 18. Also if you notice the first post is does state I am fixing an oil leak. See you have to pull the "dizzy" to set the lower manifold striaght down without sliding it and messing up the rvt bead that you put on the front and rear. I do all my own work but this is only the second time I have ever had the "dizzy" out and needed reassurance and I just bought this car and and been finding more and more problems that the owner didnt tell me about and thought that this might be a problem.

that is just tool chatter marks where the factory machined the flat

I think this post was unnecessary.

n20-89fox, what you are looking at is perfectly normal. I think it's a legitimate question for someone who's never done this before, it really does look awkward down there doesn't it?

Stifle the holier than thou attitude. A simple answer to his question without the sarcasm would have sufficed! Answers like that make people afraid to ask questions!

I apologize your guys are right that wasn't an apropriate remark and this is one of the few sites you can go to and not get ragged on. That was not my intention, it just made me chuckle. And by the way shortthrow50 thats a sweet looking motor on you stand, did u build that?

yeah man. Its the stock block though. I did however put all new crap on it and painted the block. The block only has 65k miles on it. I will replace the whole setup eventually with a stroker of course and may ultimately just sell the whole engine. Its in the car now and runs pretty good. There is some vid in my sig. thanks

Sounds like we built the same motor. I have a stock bottom end , blasted with fresh paint, aluminum heads, cam, vict jr, and a 750 DP. That motor runs almost as good as it looks. Being a former Ford tech I have a great appreciation for people that take the extra step of cleaning and painting, doesnt make the car any faster but damn it looks good.
