I let my car sit outside for about 9 months with the motor apart down to the block, hood closed and a sheet over the block...is my block ruined now? This is what it lookes like.

No its not ruined, clean it i would use a shop vac suck all the coolant passeges and holes clean, clean the rust from the deck surface, clean the cylinder walls, and lightly oil, put heads and parts back on, oh yeah and change the oil, when you first run it i would let it get to temp and then change oil again too be safe, probably flush the cooling system also....

Not "ruined" per say, but not a wise move to leave it exposed to the elements.

I would say Maybe not others might know better then me but befour you rebuild it, it might not hurt to soke the cylinders with oil for a couple of days and then try to turn the motor by hand. Might have to clean out the head bolt holes. If it help i had some one give me a dirt bike that was about 6 mounths old because they road it in some deep water and let it sit and the bike sezzed up so i soked it with marvel mystery oil for a day or two and got it running in no time

i dont see why, unless you messed up the rings. then you just get it bored/honed new pistons/rings and say hello to a 306. otherwise just chase those headbolt holes and youll be fine. and clean up the deck.

Not ruined. You will probably need to pull it apart and lightly hone the cylinders and replace the rings....that would almost be the right way to do it. You could get away with sucking the moisture out, filling the cylinders will oil and leave sitting for a while, crank the motor over and over gently by hand, and finally removing the rust from the deck. Most people get lucky.

If it was me I'd rebuild the engine. But as I described there are 3 ways to go about it- the right way, almost the right way, and the way of the toothless. Your call.

That sucks man. I think it's salvageable with a lot of work and careful cleaning.

You should be fine, I would tear the whole motor down though and a thorough cleaning and honing. I would replace the rings atleast. Having it cleaned at a machine shop would be the best idea though. Shouldn't cost much either. Good luck. Or like fox racer said, it would be a good time to upgrade to a 306 or strokin time!

With that much rust on the cylinders it would be best to hone it or the rings may not seal, clean it all, have it tanked, decked and do a minor rebuild.

Now since it was sitting the rigs may be seized to the cylinder walls, I'd soak it for a few days before trying to turn it over.

that marborol mystery oil will fix that right up.. put it completely around all the pistons and let the rings so for one day.. turn it over and it will spin easier then it ever has.. that stuff is miracle cure

OK I called around to some shops in the area and they are all around $700 to get new rings bearings, and clean it.

So im gonna try that Marvel Mystery Oil and clean it up myself, any suggestions on how to do this or how to remove some of the rust

my machine shop is charging me 475 for tanking it, painting, installing plugs and cam bearings, decking, boring and honing. so maybe if you take it in as a bare block like im doing it will be cheaper

If I had a block that looked like that I would go ahead, rebuild it while you have it out and save yourself some headaches down the road, unless you absolutely don't have the bills to do so.

thats is nasty.. but not all is lost.. as rick stated before.. soak the cyclinder walls and hone it.. have the machine shop heat tank it, have it decked, all the bearing surfaces polished.. and it should be just fine

I agree with Rick, that is alot of rust. Im sure it would be OK with a good cleaning and all that but I wouldnt risk it, its already torn apart and im sure a minor rebuild won't hurt. just disconnect the trans and motor mounts and its all ready to come out If you want to go the cheaper way, Scothbrite pads will work real good to take out the rust and wont leave behind any little metal shavings like SOS pads would do. After getting all the rust off I always clean the gasket surfaces with brake cleaner, just spray some on a rag and wipe her down and will get rid of all the grease and junk. Chasing the threads sounds like a good idea too and changing the oil like described above is good. If ur low on cash and need it as transportation then go for it, if not i would pull the motor and do a hone job and new rings and bearings, oil pump, gaskets. I said i was going to do just a rering and bearing rebuild on mine but ended up doing a completer rebuild with h/c/i and everything I wanted, it ended up being a well might as well change this, this, this, throw in a cam and rockers etc. I certainly don't regret it now though
