Is my input shaft FUBAR'D ?

I'm in the process of tearing apart the tranny to see if it's worth rebuilding...and found some chips taken off of the input shaft.

I'm fairly sure that it's toast...but it's a bit odd that no other gears show any sign of damage.

What are your opinions...and is there anywhere out there that has decent prices on input shafts?

Replace it before it tears up the countershaft gear that it mates with.

Hmm...when I took another look at the tranny...all of the blocker rings appeared to be in perfect condition. What else could cause rpm dependant shifting in 1'st through 4'th gears? The fifth gear blocker ring is a bit chewed up...but it shifted fine as usual.

what do you mean by rpm dependant shifting... it grinds unless you match rpms? it wont shift at all unless you match rpms? please elaborate your problem so we can help.

i would definitely replace that input shaft
you have a few choices... i looked it up with ford... theyve got it got 697.00, or you could get it from ana aftermarket place... www.ddperformance.com sold me mine for 108 shipped, so your choice

it could be torn up and no other gears torn up because your input shaft bearing got worn out and wore out the inner roller bearings between input/output shafts and caused lateral motion of the inputshaft, tearing up the gears with hard shifting with with just normal driving over an extended period

im willing to bet your pilot bearing was probably in bad shape too? maybe not necessarily but i think theres a good chance

while you're in there spring for the rebuild kit thats now 189 from ddperformance, not 169 like it used to be, to let you know jrichker. get it rebuilt and youll be a much happier man from it all

...what are blocker rings? ...synchros? sliders? im not sure what you mean by those

I just had to have a new input shaft installed in mine. It cost $79.95 for it. You can buy parts like those from the place I had my T5 rebuilt at. www.astroperformance.com

I wasn’t quite sure the proper name for it…but yeah, it grinds unless I either match rpms, or let the rev's drop below 1k rpms. If I try to shift normally it will grind unless I do the above mentioned.

As far as the pilot bearing goes…I put a new bushing in per the recommendations of my clutch builder, Clutch Dynamics inc. I have not yet inspected it yet. The input shaft has some wear marks where it meets the pilot bushing. It could have already been that way with the old pilot bearing…but I really wasn’t paying attention back then.
I do know that I've had some nasty drive train vibrations. I threw in a new driveshaft last year which helped…but didn’t cure the problem. My poly tranny mount I'm sure isn't helping, but I'm thinking that with the damage seen on the input shaft…the bearing is shot and the shaft itself may be bent. Either way, it would be stupid not to buy a rebuild kit (dd performance is on my way home from work ) and a new input shaft. It's just going to be a bit more costly than what I had anticipated.

Yeah, I found them after doing some searches. Seeing as dd performance is so close though...I'm thinking that the money saved from shipping will be close to a wash for the difference in price...and the convenience of not having to wait for it to be shipped.
