Is my transmission

When I bought my mustang approx. 9,000 miles ago (its a 96 Mustang GT w/ 105,000 miles) I noticed that 5 gear wasent engaging smooth, so I changed the tranny oil, but didint fix the problem(this was 6 months ago). I also removed the shifter assembly and greased up the shifter (the bottom of the shifter where it connects to the tranny).About a week ago I noticed that sometimes Reverse would get stuck, and literally I have to hit the shifter to get it back to neutral. Today after work 3 and 4 gear would not engage it was as if something was missalined or something. Is my tranny going out? Should change the oil and put some synthetic oil or something? If it does need to be changed how hard is it? (i'm mechanically inclined I have changed motors, tranny's but on Hondas and Integra's never on a Mustang GT). This sucks there goes my money for my PI heads and Intake, and gears

it seems like if you changed one on a little honda, itd be a breeze on your pootang.

as for tranny goin...... sorry, id say yes.

Like he said easy. Take the drive shaft out the mid pipe , crossmember and unplug everything then unbolt the bell housing.Its much easier than a honda.Btw while your in their throw a off road H-X pipe in their.

Does the Mustang GT 1996-2004 have the same t-45 transmission? If so I could put one from a 1999-2004 transmission to my 1996 motor? Thanx

Also what kinda of clutch do you guys recommend? My mods in the futute will be PI heads and intake, 4.10 gears, full exhaust (longtubes, x-pipe, catback) and probably cams, and maybe alittle laughing gas. Also do they make lighten flywheels for mustangs? Thanx

1. T-45 was from 1996-mid 2001. After mid 2001 they used the stronger T-3650
2. you can put in a T-3650 (came in 2001 1/2 and later cars), but you'll need a computer flash to calibrate the speedo (slightly different gearing than the T-45). Or just get a rebuild on your current, I was quoted about $1000 for the whole shabang
3. spec stage 1 or 2 clutch. stage 1 is good for up to like 450ft-lbs
4. not sure about the flywheels
