Is this a problem?

A friend and I installed my intake yesterday and we didn't use any gasket in the front or rear. It seems as the front is not seating all the way down to the block, it looks as if there is a 1/8" gap between the intake and block, it is filled with RTV but wil lthis be a problem / Has anyone else experienced this? The intake seats to the heads just fine.

Any input would be great, just want to make sure that it is kosher before we finish.

If you're talking about the gaskets that go in the front and rear of the lifter valley, which it sounds like you are, I've heard many people say that they don't use the gaskets that come with the set and just use RTV, so it should be fine. Its been so long since I changed my intake that I honestly don't remember what I did. It sounds like you should be fine, though, based on what others have said.

ya I am just trying to make sure that that 1/8" gap is ok.......if it is I think I will goopit up with some more RTV to make sure there will be no pin holes

No one really uses the rubber gaskets in the front and rear, because they usually wind up leaking. A good bead (3/8") of RTV will close that gap nicely, and it won't leak.

I used RTV to seal it up, there is a little gap on mine. I don't think you have any problem.

Speak for yourself. If they're in the gasket set, I use em. And mine never leak. Felpro's newer intake gasket sets with the cork end gaskets have an adhesive on the block side, just peel the paper off, stick em on, and they're guaranteed not to poke out when you torque the intake down.

I've seen both methods work and I've seen them both leak. Bottom line is that if you get a leak you'll have an oily mess on your hands.

we got it running yesterday, and it leaked

have to pull the intake and goober some more on.

I was having some problems remembering which way the dizzy spun. so timing was a little bit goofy, then the metal parts of the plug wires were pulled back into the boots so it ran like crap until we figured it out.

carb fires are exciting.

forgot to mention it was around 100* yesterday so we were both sweating like dirty pigs.

we had to set the idle high beacause of the vacuum leak, so every time it was put in gear it chirped the tires.

we did learn some key points yesterday. studs and bolts on an intake suck. the dizzy spins counter clockwise, heater hoses are hot, anything left in the sun is hot, and motors are really loud when you forget to put the #1 sparkplug back in.

But if you revert back to the air, fire, and fuel concept, then its fairly easy to trouble shoot.
Is the motor breathing (air through the carb)
is it circulating gas through the carb?
is the fuel being ignited (spark)

if any of those are not occuring, then you stand back and curse until you figure out what it was that you broke.

Took it all back off and put more RTV on it and another set of new gaskets as the others riped on removal. So hopefully It will run well after the RTV dries...... by the way how long does that take?

I always use those gaskets. I had an air pocket on the rear bead once and it leaked and I have been using them since.

Something else you can get are silicone intake end gaskets. I had some that came in a 5.0 gasket set. They have littles bosses that lock into holes in the block and you can install them dry save for where the intake/end gaskets meet. They squeeze like hell, but dont break.
