I'm starting to get my ducks in a row. I think I have found two places where I can get the used parts I need to fix my mustang cheaply. I have lined up fenders, a radiator support, bumper pieces with cover, headlights, and a-pillar trim.
A little cutting, welding, hammer persuasion and paint will make my cobra presentable again.
For the power side, I'm creating a really unusual combination.
I just got a Roush intake, yes that 1 of 100 or so wicked looking piece of aluminum sex. I was ammazed at the size of the ports, they are probably twice the cross-sectional area of my cobra intake and 3/4 as long. The injectors mount between the two banks of runners and have a straight shot at the intake valve.
It's quality is a mixed bag. There was a little chip in the casting created when they flycut the roush lettering in the upper plenum and the paint isn't all that great, but I'm after performance.
To go with the intake I also bought a set of used GT40 iron castings that I will port out and rebuild. I have a friend with a machine shop that will let me grind away, and one of his neighbors has a flow bench, so I'll see how close I can get to the origional CNC ported Roush GT40's that would add 100 hp to a GT with the intake. The valves will be upgraded to 1.94 intake and 1.6 exhaust, with comp cams beehive springs and angle milled for 10.5-1 compression on the 331 shortblock that is next on the list.
Evidently, the custom roush EECIV for the intake was the same cobra computer I allready have, and I allready have the 24lb/hr injectors, 65mm throttle body and 70 mm MAF that I need to finish it off.
I am going to wait for a good deal on a tweecer, so to tune the fuel curve, I bought a used pro-m MAF optimizer for idle and part throttle tweaks and an AFPR to tune WOT.
For ignition, I am going to try something really different. I have been buying explorer 5.0 edis parts and I now have a coil pack, a harmonic damper with the important crank trigger ring, the pickup, the cam position sensor, an edis8 module from a crown victoria and a couple of wiring diagrams. This will let me ditch my distributor and give me good accurate spark well beyond the point that my valves will float. It will also look really cool.
Now I just need to find cheap full length headers to get rid of the last restriction left in my Cobra, stock shorties.
While I'm working on it, I'll take the oppertunity to add a tubular K-member, trunk mount the battery and add a better fuel pump.
After that is done, I'll send two of my spare wheels out for widening and work on getting the power to the ground.
I have got a Boxster S, S500 AMG and a Viper that I have to show up, so I have my work cut out for me.
