Yeah, I know, you might look at my combo and say "so what?" But this is kind of a big deal for me, I just picked up at least 100 hp (my non-HO was probably making like 150), it's waayyy deeper than I've ever gotten into a motor before, and it didn't some how explode when I fired her up (the cats caught on fire I think though, they were smoking bad enough for a while to make me run and grab the fire extinguisher!).

Also, though I've owned several sportbikes before, this is the fastest car that I've ever driven (not saying much, but it's at least a 13-second car I think) much less owned, and I managed to do it for about 2 grand (including purchase of the car) while setting the stage for future upgrades. She's not the cleanest, prettiest, or fastest, but she's mine (and all I can afford at that).

All that enthusiasm aside, I almost want to kick my otherwise POS car, as previously minor flaws (brakes, suspension) stand way out now, and other stuff keeps popping up; for instance my brake lights don't work now, and in a little while I'll have to go check the switch because the new bulbs I put in earlier had no effect and the fuses look OK, and the interior lights never lit up all the way and only worked with the dimmer switch in a certain position, which nearly cost me my motor earlier, as it was overheating and I didn't notice it until the gauge was a hair away from the red!

Which brings me to another gripe about the car; shortly before I fired it for the first time the other day, I noticed coolant leaking from the water pump as I was filling the cooling system, but I fired it anyways (I just had to) and fixed it that night. The next day, I noticed water trickling from the thermostat housing, so I fixed that last night, thinking it wasn't a big deal because I just put the gasket on with no silicone or anything the first time. Today, of course, there was no improvement, and I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a crack in the housing or something; I sure as hell don't want to have to pull the lower manifold off at this point, so if it's cracked I'm sensing the use of some JB weld in my near future . . .

If it isn't one thing, it's something else; at least she runs though, I've been waiting long enough.

T-stat housings can be a biotch. Clean the **** out of the surfaces of the intake and the housing. I usually get a gasket, silicone it with the T-stat to the housing, let it tack up, then put some on the intake and bolt it together. I let it sit for at least 12 hours. I use RTV Ultra Copper.

BTW....nice upgrades. Every little bit helps. Enjoy it for this summer, save during the winter, and add more things next year.

She doesn't look too bad either. You'll always love 'em, but they're always a PITA

Hehe I showed the "good" side; the driver door is dented in and lacking an external handle, and the passenger interior door handle is broken. Both of the seat brackets are broken; the driver seat only has 2 bolts holding it in and the seatbelt is tied off because it doesn't retract  so I have to take it slow for now 'cause I enjoy not being dead. The fuel level gauge doesn't work, neither does the oil pressure sensor (though I think that'll be an easy fix) it just goes on and on hehehe . . . . :nonono:

i have a ton of grey interior parts if you need door panels, sun visors, sill plates, dash pad, door handles or kick panels, console armrest etc. i also have a brand new thermostst housing i never installed on my motor when i built it... let me know what you need and i'd be happy to help you out, loving the car hobby while being short on funds sucks :(

 That line made me laugh! :nice:
Great progress so far man, you have a Stang so you are already light years ahead of me. Sounds like you have a good handle on things and will get it worked out though. T-stat housings are the worst on these cars and had me fight it for a few days too. RTV'ing it to the housing is the best way to do it but you really need to let it cure overnight before adding coolant. That was the only way I could get er done :rlaugh:
Dont forget to burp the air out of the system. Try to have the nose a little high so the air travels towards the rad fill. :nice:

And thats why you are co-admin. :flag:

I didn't have a gasket and I wanted to knock it out last night, so I just used a bunch of RTV red silicone; I dumped some water on then let it set up for a while before putting it back on, with the water it tacked up real quick, in fact I started the car maybe less than 7 hours later and presto, no leaks. While putting it on again for the third friggin time I noticed that the clamp on the heater hose was interfering with the housing; this probably caused the bad seal the first two times, no idea how I missed that.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys, hopefully I can keep the car out of harms way long enough to finish it . . . [knocking on wood] . . .

Wow, I really appreciate that :hail2:; however I must focus on fixing the important things like my seat brackets (I'll probably just get some good cheap used seats locally, or a racing seat if I can find one cheap enough that isn't too uncomfortable) and seatbelts and the like. I grabbed some interior door handles last time I was at the junkyard, just haven't gotten around to putting them on yet; correction, I was having trouble with them so I might take you up on those. At the moment I've got some other issues with the car too, I'll post those in the tech section.
