IT'S NOT A 5.0!

I get compliments on my car pretty regularly. I get the usual, "That's a sweet ride you've got there", "That's a badass mustang", "Your car sounds fkn awesome" and such. However, it is becoming more and more frequent that I get the, "That 5.0 sounds mean" or "I love your car, that has a 5.0 right"?

AaaAAArRRRGggggg!!!!!

I realize that not everyone is a mustang aficionado, but when these comments are coming from grown men who seem to have a taste in cars I would have thought that they at least knew that there hasn't been a 5.0 in a mustang for 16 years

I've encountered this too...I'm sure we all have. I just think it's just that those that aren't "in the know" feel the 5.0 moniker is all-encompassing when it comes to the Mustang and don't fully know to what it references. I just politely correct them and we continue the conversation.

BTW...don't forget that the 5.0 is back, at least in name...

I get the "is it a 5.0???!?!?" ALL the friggin time. And the funny thing is, the 96-98 GTs even have "4.6" written on the side!!!

But what is so, SO much worse, is when you say, "No, it has the 4.6", to which they reply, "Oh, dang, that sucks man. I don't know why they ever went away from that 5.0 to a smaller motor."

And occasionally, I'll get the "I had 5.0 swap, big block ya know, in my old Town Car. Man, that thing would MOVE!"

I get this all the time too, except when I tell them it's a 4.6 they say "oh, it's just a V-6" f'n idiots. 4.6L V-6 would be a damn big six though

The 5.0 was such a heavy hitter back in the day. These old guys remember being 16 and getting stomped on by them. It's all they can think about.

Lol. In recent times, when someone says "5.0", I instantly think of 4 valve heads, variable camshaft timing, 400 rwhp naturally aspirated, and a Mustang that can actually kick the Camaro's ass.

5.0s have always been mustangs that can kick Camaro's asses , except 1993 when they started with the LT1, I guess. I don't know why they ever went to the 4.6 (ewww!) either

I'm glad the new 5.0s are around. When I get that question, I'll tell people that I have a REAL 5.0, not those wanna-be new ones that are trying to take credit for my car's legacy, but the one of the REAL ones. Too bad the REAL ones aren't actually 5.0s, or that they only made 225 hp. Oh well... They don't really care about all that stuff, anyway. It's hard to outrun a memory of how fast they were. haha

Dude get used to it. I have been hearing it since the day after I bought my 03. It never ends. I got it just the other day at the gas station. The worst ones are the people who look all dissapointed when you tell them it's a 4.6 and then they proceed to tell you that their old "insert random old muscle car" would blow your doors off. At that point I usually pop my hood to show them my KB 2.1.

I have had countless people ask me that while I'm in the 88 lx, but rarely in the 97 GT. When they ask and I'm in the 88, I just reply: "nope, just a little 2.3 liter". It is usually while I am at the track and I let the numbers do the talking.

Now that the 5.0 is back, the 4.6 will always be the red headed stepchild. The ol' 5.0 could make very good power because it had a nice big 4" bore with a 3" stroke, and you could get enough head and intake on there to spin it to the moon. The 4.6 has a bore and stroke that are nearly equal, which makes a nicely balanced street engine, but it doesn't particularly like to rev like the 5.0 would (in modified form).

I am actually not a big fan of the 4.6 beyond the reliability and improved EFI (compared to the EEC-IV 5L cars). The 4.6 just doesn't have enough cubes or head/intake combos that work (probably because of the small bore).

Except for those durned hydraulic lifters, the 2-bolt mains, and a block that splits north of 500rwhp... Other than those things, which can easily be fixed by replacing the entire block and the internals, yeah, they'd rev to the moon, alright...

Read the above as sarcasm... Actually, revving was always the mod motor's strength. Stout blocks with as much capability for power as you could throw at it, solid mains, and an OHC that needed just a little work to spin to 7500+ rpm made it the clear choice in that regard. The advantage of the old 5.0 was the ability to stroke it out to a 347 and the absolutely gigantic aftermarket where it was so easy to make any amount of power you wanted to with the money and a cookie-cutter solution. 500rwhp? That's laughably easy with a 5.0.
