Okay...since I'm a bit stuck for time, here, I decided to skip the search option for this question.

I've got a 5-speed GT and want to change the gears. With that said, I'm thinking 3.73's because the car is driven daily, and I'm seriously planning to add a blower in the coming months. My sig shows what I've got for an exhaust, so you can obviously tell it's loud when in the higher RPM's. My wife and I drive the car on long freeway trips sometimes, and can currently carry a *normal* conversation without raising our voices while at 80ish. Since the gears will ultimately have the car running at higher RPM's while at the same speeds, I don't want the sound to be much louder.

So...based on this I think 3.73's are best for me. Now my question is this;

What will I need in addition to the FRPP Gears? I've heard there's an install kit and a speedo recalibration box required. I'd like to avoid the recalibration box and go with a computer chip that's burned for my mods (to include the gears) if possible. If it is, can anyone recommend one? Thanks all

first off, nice car.

yes you will need a speedo calibration to go with your new gears. you can get a chip that recalibrates the speedo. i believe you can get a diablo chip and call to give them what ratio your gears are, this way they can burn a custom chip.

im not a big chip guy, but judging on the popular opinion, diablo is the way to go.

good luck

Thanks Jon! Just to clarify what you said...a chip will be enough to recalibrate? Or will I need both? I'm thinking chip ONLY because I can use it to ditch my MIL's and the endless SES lights I get since installing the off-road H-pipe and L/T headers. Might as well use it for the gears, too!

373's should meet your needs perfectly. call up tim at t&j I think he can reflash your computer for the gears and you mods for like $100 no need for a chip

If you wern't going for a S/C I'd agree. 3.73's seem to be the consenses if you are power adding. As far as drone, I have 4.10s and the drone is signifacant at 70-75 in fifth and I have stock muffs with an O/R H. Although I have noticed below 2200 RPM's (around 60) it's not too bad and again around 3500 (90 MPH) its not too bad. So guess which speed I normally do on the HWY.

Tim at T&J Performance can flash your stock computer to recalibrate it for gears and whatever else you decide to do!!

3.73s should be fine with a blower...even though there are guys with 4.10s and a blower who also say it's fine.

I would check out T&J in terms of recalibrating your speedo also.

Thanks for the tip on the computer reflash. At the risk of sounding like an idiot, Where is the computer located on the 2001 and is it a simple removal? I like this idea more than the *chip* idea. Will a reflash also correct the regular SES lights I'm getting due to the MIL's?

One other question about the reflash...If I decide to add any other mods AFTER reflashing, will it cause problems? Thanks all for the suggestions. I'll give T&J a ring on Monday

Good choice on the 3.73's. Tim can recalibrate your computer with an adaptive strategy as well as a speedo correction. Then you can add mods with out a retune!!

tim can reflash the comp and accoutn for all mods, then you can add more without a retune, like 96&01 said

Well If you want more than just a gear change I'd assume you'd want the whole reflash tune then but speak to Tim considering he's the one who has the software to tune it and answers for that matter.
