I have a 98 5-speed and when I put the car in reverse the other day it didn't wanna come out of reverse. So finally I gave the shifter a good whack and it came out, but my problem wasn't solved there. Now when I have the car in neutral on the shifter, I can let the clutch out and the car will start moving forward, almost as if I was trying to start in 4th gear. But it will never get up to 4th gear speed. Something else is grabbing and the trans grinds a bit and then the motor will die due to the low RPMs. I assume that 4th gear and the reverse gear are both grabbing, or something of the sort. Any ideas?

Sounds like you broke a shift fork and it is stuck in gear. That would be my guess though. Someone else may come along with better or the same diagnosis.
